It was that time again for the annual New York City Fair! I smile, remembering all the great memories I had from the fair. There was one where my dad had fainted after going in the haunted house, one where Auggie ended up puking all over Farkle, one where I had caused a human domino effect with my klutziness, and one where I realized I loved my best friend in a different way than I had originally thought. That's right, I like Maya romantically.
Today was the opening day and of course my mom and dad took Auggie and I, along with Maya, Farkle, Lucas, and Zay to the fair. We made it halfway to the entrance before being stopped by a huge mob of people, all shouting and trying to buy tickets, waving their money in the air.
"Well that's just great!" Zay exclaims, seeing the size of the ticket line.
My dad scoffed. "Please. I don't need to wait in line." He braggs and tries to push his way through the crowd. His efforts were futile, as he was trying to push against a really ripped dude. The dude turned around to find my dad with a sheepish smile on his face.
"It was her!" My dad quickly yells, pushing my mom in front of him. "She did it!"
My mom gave my dad a dirty look before turning back to the dude. "I'm sorry about him. He's just a bit excited about the fair." The dude just shrugged before turning back around.
My parents began arguing about what had just happened and the rest of us watched, amused. Maya grabs my hand, making me blush. Farkle, Lucas, and Zay all roll their eyes. I never told them about my feelings, they had found out on their own. The three of them had said that it was too obvious and apparently that everyone knew about my little crush except Maya herself.
Maya sends me a grin, still watching my parents bicker. She looks back at me, biting her lip and running a hand through her hair, making my breath hitch. Zay snickers when noticing my reaction. He quickly tries to turn it into a cough when Maya sends him a confused glance.
Farkle and Lucas both look like they were about to burst with laughter while Zay was still fake coughing. Finally, the three of them couldn't take it anymore and howl with laughter, making it my turn to roll my eyes.
Maya raises an eyebrow at them. "You guys are losers." She says.
"Aw, you CRUSHed us." Zay chuckles, putting the emphasis on crush. I glare at him, trying to get him to stop before Maya finds out.
After a half hour of waiting (where I was desparately trying not to face plant from my weak knees due to Maya leaning into me), we finally got our tickets and entered the fair. My parents took Auggie with them, telling us that we'll meet back up at the Ferris Wheel in a couple hours.
"Hey Riley, you should go in the Tunnel of Love." Lucas smirks.
"Oh yeah, for sure!" Farkle agrees with him. "But where oh where are you going to find someone to go with you? Oh, I know, Maya!" He says, making me blush once again at the thought.
"NO!" I exclaim, glaring at them again. They hadn't stopped teasing me about my crush ever since they found out.
Maya's smile drops and a hurt expression appears on her face, making me feel terrible.
"No, wait!" I shout, trying to fix my mistake. "I didn't mean it like that, I do want to go with you!" My eyes widen when I realize what I just said. "I-I didn't mean it like that either! I-I w-w-want to g-go w-with y-you as friends!" I babble on, only making it worse.
"Honey?" Maya says, making me stop talking.
"Y-yeah?" I stutter, face red with embarrassement.
"Do you want to go in the Tunnel of Love with me or not?" She asks.
