"NO!" I shout, telling her to back off.
"Not a mustard fan, got it." Maya says, setting the mustard back down. The two of us were at a food court. Nothing was going right today. My hair ended up all crispy, my dress was ruined, my shoes were broken, and I still had to take my driver's test today, even though Prom was tonight.
I had first met Maya this morning. She showed up at my house, looking for a necklace I had bought from this thrift shop. I don't understand why she wanted it so bad, it was just a cheap piece of costume jewelry.
Maya had pretended to be the FBI, although she wasn't fooling anyone. She was fresh out of high school, only 19. I scoff, like I was supposed to believe she's part of the FBI.
I chomp on my corndog angrily. The stress was getting to me. According to my status records on my phone, Missy Bradford is beating me for Prom Queen. I pull at a strand of hair, grimacing when it snaps.
"Oh snap." Maya smirks, shaking the ketchup. I respond by throwing the strand of hair at her. "Ew, stop it. That's disgusting." Maya crinkles her nose, looking like a cute, fluffy little bunny.
I shush her, answering my phone. "Hey Dad."
"Riley!" My dad greets me. "Listen, I talked to one of my co-workers. They don't have prom in her country but she does have a couple dresses that you could choose from. And there's a huge sale at Discount Warehouse of Shoes!"
"Oh uh, thanks Dad. Those are...good options." I say.
"Okay. Hey honey, I got to go. I'll be home at six. Bye, yo!" My dad exclaims.
"Yeah, no yo." I say.
"Got it. Bye!" He hangs up.
"Discount Warehouse of Shoes." I groan. Maya quirks an eyebrow. She opens her mouth to talk but I shush her again. I can't deal with her right now, why was she so annoying!?
Maya looks over her shoulder, squinting her eyes, a frown appearing on her face. "Uh...you know your boyfriend?" Maya asks. "The soulless jock with the bedazzled letterman's jacket?"
"He's not soulless!" I huff.
"Right. He's full of soul, I forgot." She says, rolling her eyes. "Let's say, hypothetically, I saw him flirting with another girl at say, the mall food court? Would you want me to tell you?" She asks hesitantly, craning her neck.
"What?" I flip around, glancing behind me. My eyes widen when I find Lucas sitting with Missy, the two of them sharing a taco. "He's supposed to be helping orphans!" I exclaim.
"Does that girl have parents?" Maya asks.
"Yes!"
"Then he's not doing that." Maya says, chuckling slightly. I scoff at her words before storming my way over to them. "Lucas!?"
"Riley!" Lucas shouts, clearly not expecting me here.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"Uh... The orphans canceled." Lucas says hesitantly.
"Really? The orphans canceled?" I say, scowling in disbelief.
"Uh, they were booked up today. Very busy doing orphan stuff." Lucas explains sheepishly.
"Hi Riley." Missy says sweetly. "Nice hat. Are you going for a luge later?" She mocks, producing laughs from everyone around us.
"Lucas, how could you do this with her?" I say.
"No, this isn't what it looks like!" Lucas shouts.
"Okay, cause it looks like my supposed boyfriend is having a date with my arch rival." I sneer.
