"Riley, we need to break up." Lucas says. "What? Why?" I ask hesitantly, even though I already know the answer. Lucas sighs. "You know why."
I gulp. "Yeah, I do." I take a subconscious glance at Maya, who was sitting with Farkle and Zay, giving us some alone time. The five of us were at Topanga's.
Lucas looks over to Maya as well, then shifts his gaze back to me. He gives a heavy sigh that I mirror. "I'm sorry Lucas." I apologize with a sad smile.
He gives one back to me. "It's okay Riley. I'll be fine." He stands up and makes his way to everyone else, leaving me alone to my thoughts. I can't believe I did this. I fell for my best friend, only making things more complicated. I think back to the whole Rucaya love triangle. Lucas had chosen me, leaving Maya heartbroken. No matter how much the three of us had tried to avoid it, someone still got hurt.
After the triangle was resolved, I had hoped that things would go back to normal. Oh how I was wrong. Only a couple days after Lucas picked me, I realized something. I realized why I would always get a pang of sadness in my chest whenever I was watching Lucas and Maya 'flirt'. It wasn't because I was jealous of Maya, I was jealous of Lucas. I fell for my best friend without even knowing it.
After my moment of clarity, I understood why everything was the way it was. Why I never wanted Maya and my uncle Josh together, why I felt relieved when no one asked Maya to the semi-formal, why I felt so sad when Farkle and Maya got 'married'. But now things are an even bigger mess than before. Sure the triangle was solved, but the drama had just begun.
I snap out of my thoughts and look over at the rest of my friends. They were looking back at me. Did Lucas already tell them? Lucas gave a slight nod of his head, as if he heard my question and was answering it.
"Hey honey, you okay?" I look up to find myself staring at the person who was the reason for the breakup. Maya. "I'm fine." I say, my breath getting caught as I look at her.
"I realized that I no longer had any feelings for Lucas." I say, giving her a small smile. She sits down next to me and wraps her arm around me, sending my heartbeat into a frenzy. "You and me against the world?" I ask her again.
"Always." She answers. Her phone then beeps. "Andrew just asked me if I wanted to hang out!" She exclaims, a smile on her face. My chest gives another pang of sadness. Right, Andrew. While I was still dating Lucas, Maya had met this guy named Andrew. They seemed to hit it off right away, and now they were like an unofficial thing.
Maya notices my expression. "Riles, if you don't want me to go, I'll say no." I shake my head, ignoring the lump in my throat. "Go Maya. I don't want to keep you from your happiness." Even if it's without me. I try not to cry as I watch her face light up. She gives me a quick hug and runs out the door to get ready. I feel tears start to form in my eyes and try to subdue them.
"Riley." Another voice says. "Farkle." I say back.
"You like Maya." He says. I freeze at his words. "W-what are you talking about? Did Lucas tell you!?" I panic and look back at Lucas. He was busy talking to Zay, not noticing Farkle and I looking at him.
Farkle shakes his head. "No, I finally put it all together. Plus there was your facial expression when Maya left. You need to tell her how you feel."
I frantically shake my head. "I can't do that Farkle! She's happy with Andrew."
"Look at what happened when Maya hid her feelings for Lucas." Farkle points out. "If you do the same, it's just gonna be another big mess. I'm giving you 24 hours to tell Maya. If you don't, then I will." Farkle then walks back over to Lucas and Zay, leaving me in shock at his words.
