"I'll decide who I want to go with on my first date, within whatever time it is that someone asks me!" Riley shouts to Matthews.
Lucas's hand shoots up almost immediately. I force myself to smile and pretend to be happy for her. Farkle looks at me sympathetically, knowing my feelings for the smiley princess that was Riley. Riley glances back at Lucas, a small frown on her face. I could've sworn she shifted her gaze to me for a second but then turned back to Lucas, a big goofy grin appearing on her face, making me want to scream in frustration and heartbreak.
A genuine smile spreads on my face when I see Matthews's sour expression.
"Fine." Matthews gives in easily, too easily. There was a catch, there had to be a catch. "You want my blessing? Okay."
And with that, Lucas stands up and walks to Riley. "Will you-"
Before he could even finish, Riley shouts "Yes!" while I watch the scene with a somber expression.
"Now wait just a second." Matthews interrupts. "Riley, I'll let you go on the date with one condition."
"Which is?" Riley asks skeptically, not sure where this was going.
"You make it a double date and Maya and Farkle have to come along." Matthews smirks, knowing that I would never agree to a date with Farkle.
Riley's mouth drops open. "You can't do that!" She shouts, sounding... jealous? "You can't force her to go!"
"Oh, I'm not forcing her to." Matthews says. "It's her choice. She goes, you go, she doesn't go, you don't go."
Well played Matthews, well played.
The whole class turns to face me, with the center of attention on me. I had to do it. Riley likes Lucas, she would die of happiness if she was able to go on a date with him. And I wasn't going to be the one to stop her from being happy, even if it means I'll be miserable. She deserves an endless supply of happy days.
"Okay." I say slowly, making nearly everyone's mouth drop open, including Matthews.
"WHAT!?" He shrieks. "No Maya! This was the part where you say no so Riley can't go on a date with Lucas!"
"Too bad for you!" I mock him, making him throw his hands up in the air in frustration.
"Maya, you don't have to do this." Riley says hesitantly, glancing back and forth between Farkle and I.
"Riles, it'll be fine." I reassure her, sending her a wavering smile that was on the brink of a grimace.
Farkle suddenly stands up and grabs me by the arm, dragging me out of the class. Before the wall blocked my vision of her, I saw Riley frowning at the two of us.
"Farkle, what are you doing!?" I shout, wrenching my arm out of his grip. I'm about to go back to class when Farkle throws his arm out, stopping me.
"Maya, you can't do this!" Farkle exclaims.
"I can and I will." I say. "Besides, I thought you would've jumped at the chance to go on a date with me."
"Not when I know you have feelings for someone else. And she has feelings for you, I'm positive of it!" Farkle shouts.
"No she doesn't. She likes Lucas." I mumble, looking down at the ground.
"You don't know that." Farkle says.
"Yes, I do!" I shout. "Have you not heard her talk about Lucas all the time!? About how kind he is, about how smart he is, about how charming he is, ABOUT HOW PERFECT HE IS!?"
