I groan, looking at the detention slip I had gotten. I quietly slip in the detention room, quickly passing the teacher my slip. Upon further inspection, I realize who it is.
"Unbelievable. YOU are doing detention today?" I groan.
"How you doing honey?" My dad says, unfazed by my words. I groan again and slam my head on the desk.
I look around the room to see that there were only two other people here. There was the nerd, Farkle and the jock, Lucas. I didn't know Farkle personally, but I have been partners with him in science and Lucas and I used to be friends. I sigh, knowing that this detention was going to be a while. That was, until the last person entered the room. I freeze, it was her. My crush, the one and only Maya Hart.
Unfortunately, I could never be with her. She was the most popular person in school and I was a loner who ate lunch with the cafeteria lady.
"Alright." My dad says, standing up.
Before he could say anything else, I couldn't resist saying "I can't believe you're going to be my FATHER again!"
Everyone turns to look at me, including Maya. I flush under her gaze and quickly turn away. My dad gives me a confused look. "Uh, don't you mean-"
"I know what I said." I say, producing a couple snorts from Lucas. The corners of my mouth turn up in a smile before I remember we weren't friends anymore.
"Yeah, okay." My dad says, rolling his eyes. "Anyways, detention. I like my detention to have a little learning in it."
"Of course you do." I retort.
"Honey?" My dad asks.
"What?"
"Shut up." My dad retaliates. Lucas gives a couple more chuckles and I even notice Farkle and Maya have small smiles on their face. My chest flutters at the thought of me being the reason Maya smiled.
"Now without any more interruptions," My dad looks back at me. "This detention is gonna be a bit different." My dad looks between Lucas and I, as if he was planning something.
"Oh no, dad! Whatever you're planning, it's not gonna work! Lucas and I aren't friends anymore and you can't change that!" I exclaim, giving a glare at Lucas. Lucas responds by sticking his tongue out.
"Oh, real mature!" I yell at him.
"Oh, real mature!" He mocks back, sticking his tongue out again. Maya and Farkle watch us with confused expressions.
"Watch me." My dad says. He runs over to the door and opens it. He steps out the room and closes the door behind him, locking it. He gives us one last wave before leaving.
"Dad! You can't do this!" I shout, even though he couldn't hear me anymore.
"Look, can you just make up with Lucas so this detention can be over?" Maya asks me. It takes me a second before I realize she was talking to me. I blush for a second before angry feelings for Lucas rise up.
"Not until he apologizes for what he did!" I shout.
"Uh, what exactly did he do?" Farkle asks, sick of being confused.
"Lucas broke his promise!" I shout. "We promised we would stick together in high school and the first day of school, he goes and makes new friends and never talks to me again!" I glare daggers at Lucas.
"I only did that because you wouldn't do anything! You wouldn't talk to anyone, make friends with anyone, or do anything remotely fun! You wanted to live your high school life under the radar! I mean, look at you now! You eat lunch with the cafeteria lady!" Lucas retorts.
