Chapter 2

15 hours earlier…

The alarm clock went off at 12 'o' clock in the afternoon. The sun shone as bright as it could through the bedroom window. But nobody was in there. Someone burst through the doorway. He was a teenage boy with electric blue hair, light green eyes, and a broken arm. His left hand turned it off. He picked it up and walked out of the room.

"Mum?" he called. No reply. "Mum?"

With his white hoodie, his blue jeans and his trainers on, the boy walked down the stairs into the hallway. The smell of breakfast ran through the house. He walked into the dining room, where his dad sat eating breakfast, reading the newspaper.

His dad looked away from the newspaper and turned to him, smiling. "Hey Chris. How's the arm?"

"Better than before."

"Good. Now don't make any plans for today. You should know already, it's your cousin's birthday. We've already got them something so just don't make plans alright."

"Mum in the kitchen?"

"Yeah. She's making breakfast for you."

Chris headed into the kitchen. His mum was listening to the radio. She was making toast to go along with his egg.

She smiled at him. "Oh, Chris. I always wondered where you got your hair colour from." his mum ran her hand through his hair. "No matter where you got it from, I've always loved it."

Chris felt awkward. He looked down to his hand. The alarm clock was ticking away. "Mum, I was meant to ask you. Did you switch my alarm clock on? It rang at exactly 12."

"I forgot about that. I switched it on last night. I didn't change the time though. Figured I'd need to wake up early. But your dad came back and I remembered that your dad wakes up anyways. So I put it back in your room."

"Ok then. I'll put this back in my room then."

"First take this and go eat." she gave him a plate with his toast and some eggs. "You're going to need all the energy you can get."

"Alright then."

Chris walked back into the dining room with the alarm clock in the kitchen and his food in his spare hand. As he sat down to eat, his dad got up and took his plate into the kitchen. He came out on the phone.

"No! There's no need! I'll come in a few minutes then!" He hung up. "Jeez!" He looked straight at Chris. "Sorry kiddo. I guess I can't come with you."

"It's fine. I know how much work is important."

Chris didn't even look up to see what his dad was up to. He carried on eating. He could hear his dad walking up the stairs to get changed. By the time Chris finished, his dad was rushing into the car. Chris ignored his dad's actions and took his plate into the kitchen.

"Need any help, mum, before we go?"

"It's okay. I'll just pop these into the dishwasher and we'll get going, shall we? Go wait in the car. Won’t be two minutes."

Chris nodded and walked out.

After 10 minutes of waiting and the 10 minute drive, Chris came out of the car and sighed deeply. They were outside Adrian and Royce's house. The birthday twins. Nobody knew about his broken arm and he didn't want the attention from it.

He looked to his mum. "Is everyone in there? As in cousins, everyone?"

"Come on Chris. You're a 16 year old boy. You don't need to worry about things like that. Just enjoy the party."
