Chapter 6 - Recollections

In the hotel, Nero didn’t sleep. He didn’t want another nightmare. All night, he sat on the balcony, staring at his arm. Memories came flooding back.

Nero walked into the secret laboratory. Big swords hung on the walls and there were holes in the walls. His arm vibrated. He looked ahead and saw a broken sword- a katana. A huge glass separated them both. A man appeared, coming closer to the glass. He wore the Order’s uniform and held a clipboard. His brown hair was in a ponytail, and it moved every time he paced around. He wore a monocle on his left eye.

“So, you’ve come.” The man spoke. “Just as I’d expected.”

“Who the hell are you?”

“I am Agnus. Working in secrecy, very few people are p-p-p-p-privy to my existence.”

“Funny, to figure an order official out for a stroll in a hellhole kinda place like this.”

“Hellhole?!" Agnus was furious. “Watch your words!”

Nero ignored him and looked around. “So the rumours are true,” Agnus continued. “I’ll be glad to spread new ones considering your d-d-d-d-demise.”

“Don’t you think that’s a little harsh? Killing me because of the way I talk?”

Agnus made a gesture and out of those holes came out demonic flying swords.

“Great. More demons.” Nero fought as Agnus continued to talk.

“This. This is all Credo’s doing. It was Credo who ordered you to follow Dante…. It was Credo who brought you here.”

“Dante?” Nero was confused. “You mean the man who killed His Holiness? What the hell’s going on here?”

Agnus chuckled. “I don’t have to answer to you. For you are already as good as d-d-d-d-dead.”

“Well, I beg to differ.”

Nero remembered using the flying sword-bird things to break the thick glass between him and Agnus. Agnus fell on the floor. He began stammering again. “Th-th-th-th-that’s demonic power! How can it be?”

“Look who’s talking? Now answer my question.” Nero pointed his sword at Agnus’ face. “What’s going on here? And who is Dante?”

Agnus avoided the questions. He looked at Nero’s arm. “How…profound. It’s magnificent!”

“Okay, did you even hear me?” Nero swung his sword at Agnus. He caught it.

“If you want answers, then I shall give them to you.”

Nero put his sword away. “It has been a few years since I began this research. Could we bind and isolate demonic power, it would enable us to conquer the world! That, that is the wish of His Holiness.” Nero pointed his sword at Agnus again.

“Well, you may as well ditch the efforts pal, cos His Holiness is dead.”

“Ah, but His Holiness has been reborn,” Agnus smiled. “As an angel. And soon, soon so shall I.” He bowed and lifted his head, smiling evilly.

It suddenly hit Nero. A white knight, a spirit of a demon inside the order’s white armour, stabbed him, pushing him against a wall. Two other knights came and put their lances under Nero’s arms to keep him up.

Agnus walked up to him. “See what just a small fraction of my research has yielded? Look!” Agnus turned to look at the knights. “How beautiful the white armour stands. You have no idea of the hardship to bring just one armour come to life. I had capture and control countless demons to harness their souls. Summoning them alone was almost an insurmountable task.”
