Forever & Always (Ace, AU)

  You sit down at the table. He's supposed to be here. Where is he? If he was going to be late... he'd call. Or text. Or something. He wouldn't leave me in the dark.
You look at your phone. The hours tick by. Your eyes glide to the window. The driveway's still empty. You look at your phone again. You reach out and dial a number you know by heart. Sabo's.
  "Sabo? Hey. It's (Y/n). I... was wondering... if... you've seen Ace?" you bite your lip waiting for his response.
  "No, why is something wrong?" his voice floats through the receiver. He's worried for you.
  "N-no... I'm sure it's nothing. Thanks anyway Sabo," you hang up and look out the window again. He's still not here. The phone vibrates and you jump.
  You look at the caller. Luffy. You mentally face palm. Maybe Ace is with Luffy. Even if he isn't Luffy's sure to know where he is, "What's up Luffy?"
  "Something's happened! You should come to the hospital right now," he's not even finished before you're out the door.
  "I'm on my way Luffy. I'll see you there," you hang up and start waking to the hospital. It's only a few minutes away. You pass a meadow.
  Your mind wonders off to the winter. The ground was covered in snow. His birthday just passed. It was close to Valentines. You two were outside, playing with the snow. When you two went inside to warm up, you went to make hot chocolate while he went upstairs to grab something.
  When you placed the tray down on the table you felt his arms wrap themselves around you, "Hey (Y/n). I love you. Do you love me?"
  You chuckled, "Of course I love you, Ace."
  His body peeled away from yours and he bent down on one knee, "Then... would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
  You placed a hand over your mouth and nodded. He slipped a ring over your finger. You pulled him up and into a kiss.
  He pulled away and whispered in your ear, "I want you forever, forever and always, through the good and the bad and the ugly. We'll grow old together, forever and always."
  You stop outside the hospital and rush inside. You walk right up to the front desk, "I'm here for Ace. For Portgas D. Ace."
  The lady at the front desk nods and motions for you to follow. She starts to explain what happened. Something about an accident, but you're too busy looking around at all the rooms. There are so many hallways they lead you down. It's like it never ends.
  "(Y/n)!" Luffy calls out to you and you feel him hug you tightly, "I-I couldn't do anything... I'm sorry!"
  "It's alright Luffy, don't worry. He won't hold it against you," you smile as the lady tells you that you're allowed inside the room.
  You try to stay calm as you open the door an enter. Ace smiles as he sees your face. You walk over to him and clutch his hands. You sit down next to his bedside.
  "Hey, (Y/n). Do you still love me now?" he says jokingly, "Even now as I'm dying?"
  "Don't joke about that!" you raise your voice then look down, "Please. I don't want to think about losing you. And don't even think about joking like that! Of course I love you!"
  "Well then... I'm glad to hear that," he softly says.
  "We're gonna have kids! We're going to... have one boy and one girl. One that takes after you, and one that takes after me. You'll be the laid back parent. And I'll be the one they hate because I'm so strict," you spill out your plans.
  "Heh. Yeah... and we'll get that house... on the hillside. The one you said you wanted. I already bought it... I was going to tell you on our wedding day," he smiles, "We'll stay there together. We'll stay there forever, forever and always, through the good and the bad and the ugly. We'll grow old together, and always remember, wether rich or for poor or for better. We'll still love each other, forever and always."
  You stand up and run out of the room. Calling for a nurse. When you find one you tell her the plan.
  You walk over to the room next door. You smile at the couple, "U-uhm... I-I'd hate... to offend you... b-but... if you don't mind me asking... c-can... I... borrow your... wedding rings?"
  They give you a look and you look at your feet, "Y-you don't have to... i-it's just... m-my fiancé... h-he's-"
  The female gets up and places her hand on your shoulder, "Of course. I understand. No need to explain."
  She hands you the rings and smiles, "Go get married."
  You go back to Ace and he's talking to Luffy. You smile at them. You hold Aces hand and hold the rings in your other. He turns to you and smiles.
  A few minutes later, there's a knock at the door and a chaplain walks in. Ace gives you an incredulous look. You smile and hand him the females ring. He looks at you weakly. He really won't make it long...
  The chaplain starts to talk to you two and Luffy tilts his head. The little private wedding gets underway and it comes time to say your vows.
  You start out with how you two met. The stupid pun he used on you. They way you would instantly try to deny the way you felt. All the stupid fights. Tears rushed down your cheeks and you laugh.
  You then take another breath and look into his eyes, "I want you forever, forever and always, through the good and the bad and the ugly. We'll grow old together, and always remember, wether happy or sad or whatever. We'll still love each other, forever and always... forever... and always... yeah. I like the sound of that. Forever and always."
  He laughs and all of a sudden you can hear the beeps getting slower. He takes your hand and his voice is low, soft, gentle, loving, weak, "I love you forever, forever and always. Please just remember even if I'm not there, I'll always love you, forever and always."
  The sound of the beeps stop all together. A blank sound fills the room. The hand he kept around hers loosens its grip and falls onto the bed.

__Extended__
  You wake up to an empty bed. Again. You sigh and look at your bedside table. Pictures of you and Ace before the accident. A single tear runs down your cheek. The bed slightly dips down from another body climbing into the bed. A single arm wraps around your waist.
  Breath seeps onto your neck, "(Y/n)... why are you crying again?"
  "I-I'm s-sorry..." you wipe away now the many tears streaming on your cheeks, "I know you don't li-"
  He kisses your lips, "It's alright. I don't mind. You're my one and only, (Y/n). I love you. Forever and always."
