Smoker walks into Vice Admiral (Y/n)'s office and leans against the wall. He was completely confused as to why she called for him. He did know, however, that she was just like Garp. On the pirates side in some circumstances.
She stands by the window as he clears his throat, "You needed me, Vice Admiral (Y/n)?"
"Call me (Y/n). There's no need for titles here, Smoker. I did call for you, but I'm surprised you came," she continues to stare out the window without looking back at him, "I wanted to ask you about your hunt for the Straw Hats."
"My hunt for that kid? Why?" Smoker lights one cigar and narrows his eyes, "Do you want me to give up my search? I won't."
"Of course not. I'm not in charge of you. I'm just really interested in that crew myself," she chuckles, "I just wanted to know why you're so relentless."
"Before I answer that, answer one of my questions," Smoker gets off the wall, "Why do you care so much for pirates? They cause disruption to the peace and they-"
"Can I ask you a question to answer your question?" she doesn't pause even a second before continuing, "Did war cease? Are Marines completely innocent? Have we not abolished entire islands to hide a secret?"
Smoker takes a deep breath, "That was more th-"
"Murder lives forever, and so does war. It's always survival of the fittest; rich against the poor," she turns and looks at him, "At the end of the day, it's a human trait. Hidden deep down inside of our DNA. I'm not the only one who finds it hard to understand. Walk with me."
She starts to walk out the door, and he follows, "I never said-"
"Humans never change. Even after we write down the history. We just have better ways of hiding it. Humans aren't going to behave, as we think we always should," she sighs as she walks down the halls, "Do you seriously think that everyone here couldn't have just as easily become a pirate? We can bad, as we can be good."
"Now, why do you say that?" Smoker says slightly intrigued.
"Marines do the same thing as pirates," she turns a corner, "We live, we die. We steal, we kill, we lie. We're like animals, but with far less grace. Sometimes we're worse than pirates, you do know that, right? We just claimed to be the good guys with our 'absolute justice'."
"But we are the good guys," she rolls her eyes, "We made the laws so no one gets hurt."
"Our absolute justice is crap. We punish people who are in relation to pirates, which forces them to become pirates! How can we expect a perfect world, or anything at all? We're just animals... still learning how to crawl," (Y/n) sighs pulling her (h/c) hair out of her face, "Underneath it all, we're just savages. Hidden behind shirts, ties, and marriages. Craddle it all to the grave, we're still animals still learning to behave."
"You really like to compare us to animals," he mumbles, "but I get what you mean. Though... how does this apply to-"
"I'm just trying to tell you, this is how humans work. We aren't the best. No one is. We're all corrupted by our sense of justice. Keep an open mind when dealing with pirates," she stops in front of the library. She turns to face him, "You're dissmissed."
She walks through the doors and he's left alone. So what if what she said might have been true, the Marines were still the good guys. Right?
Over the course of the next few days, he's thought long and hard about what Vice Admiral (Y/n) said. Quite frankly, she's opened his eyes to the truth about the real Navy. He's at sea, so he decides to call her instead of going back, because he's already wasted precious time in finding the Straw Hats.
"Hello?" she picks up sounding more chirpy than when they first talked, "Who am I speaking to?"
He clears his throat because he forgot how to speak. Funny, I didn't have issues this morning, "Vice Admiral (Y/n), it's Smoker."
"Oh, I thought I told you to just call me (Y/n). And perfect timing. I was thinking about calling you," she taps her fingernails on the desk, "You see, I'm sorry for giving you my opinion the other day... my boyfriend broke up with me and I wanted someone to listen to me. Especially an attractive man like yourself."
"No, it's fine. I wasn't even aware that you were dating someone, but that's actually what I wanted to talk to you about," Smoker blushes a bit, "I've-
"What did you want to talk to me about?" she stops moving her fingers, "My boyfriend dumping me... or my opinion?"
"Your advice, (Y/n). I've been thinking about it and I actually agree," he hears her hum and her fingers start to drum on the table again, "On a completely unrelated note, are you free next week? Preferably Thursday?"
Her fingers immediately stop as what he said sinks in, "Smoker... are you asking me out on a date?"
"Depends," Smoker hums as he lights a cigar, "are you saying yes?"
