Chapter 2

I sat thinking through my tears for about half an hour when I heard someone crying and trying to catch their breath. They hurried into a cubicle too. It couldn't have been a monster. I closed my eyes for a few seconds, then brought myself to speak up. My voice was croaky from the tears and it first came out as a whisper, "Hel-Hello?" I stammered. The person next door stopped crying and sniffed. "It's ok, I'm not one of them," I said through tears in my eyes. I heard their cubicle door unlock and I did the same.

"Faye?" I asked. She rushed over and gave me a hug. Her eyes were just as red as mine from crying.

"What the hell's happening out there, Bella?" Faye said, trying to keep herself together.

I thought for a second, then shrugged.

"I don't understand how this can happen.... So many people are dead outside!" Faye said bursting into tears again, trying to catch her breath. Suddenly we heard more screams outside. "It's not safe to go home, I won't see my parents ever again!"

"You don't know that. Maybe this will all be over tomorrow?" I said, even though I doubted it.

Faye and I stayed squashed against the corner of a cubicle. We spoke in whispers, worried incase someone - or something, would hear us. It was still unclear how many of the monsters were lurking outside, or how many people who were once our friends were dead. I knew we must go out at some point, but I pushed the thought to the back of my mind. I looked sorrowfully out of the small window by the door but quickly turned away at the disturbing sight; the school looked like a battlefield.

At least 3/4 of my school had perished, the others had either managed to escape, or hiding like us. It would be getting dark soon, which would be even more dangerous. But Faye and I had no choice but to stay on campus, as our homes were probably infested with monsters. "Maybe we should look for others," I suggested, though after saying it, I realised it was a terrible idea. Faye gave me a doubtful look. I sat back down next to her. We sat in silence thinking, when we heard someone bang frantically on the door.
