When I woke up I didn't know where I was. It definitely wasn't the classroom. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness I realized I was in a cot and Mr. McConaway was in a cot about two feet away from mine. He was still unconscious. It looked like I was in a tent but I wasn't sure so I got up to go look outside and thankfully my knife was on a small table in between the two cots. I didn't grab it though, because I didn't plan on wandering too far away.
When I walked outside I realized I was in a tent. There were three more tents and a fire pit surrounded by logs.
It looked like the sun was just coming up so everyone must of still be asleep. Then I looked across the camping area and saw someone who appeared to be standing guard. Probably to make sure zombies don't attack in our sleep.
I walked up to the person, their back to me. "Hey," I said.
"You're up early," she didn't turn to talk to me.
" Why am I here?"
"If you weren't here you'd be dead."
"Why'd you have to knock me and my teacher out to get us here?"
"You wouldn't of cooperated."
"How do you know?"
She turned around. "Would you trust total strangers? And stop asking so many damn questions!"
"I'm Claudia. Who are you?"
"Valerie."
"Can I ask why you guys decided to save us?"
"Would you of rather died?"
"No...Thank you for saving us. And where are we?"
"This is the last of your questions that I'm answering. We're on a hill in Buffalo, New York." At least we didn't leave the state I thought.
"What are you going to do when it gets cold?"
"I told you that was the last damn question I was answering!"
"Sorry."
"What's with all of this yelling? Can't I get a few damn hours of sleep?!" Someone started getting out of one of the tents.
"Maggie!" I exclaimed.
"Claudia?" Maggie walked out of the tent rubbing her eye. "You're okay!"
"Yeah! How'd you get here?"
"You don't know how many days have gone by, do you?" Maggie was now standing in front of me.
"How many?"
"Three."
"Oh...Wow. So who else is here?"
"In that tent," pointing to the tent I came out of, "you and McConaway. In the tent next to yours Mark and Jason. Next to that mine and Valerie's. And on the end Mike and...Nicole."
"Oh my god, she's okay?!"
"Yeah, she just barely made it out."
Mr. McConaway came out of are tent. "What is the meaning of this?!" He asked.
"You too with the questions!" Valerie
said. She explained the same thing to him that she explained to me.
About 20 minutes later everyone else started getting up. Valerie and Maggie lit a fire to make breakfast. We had bacon and pancakes. The bacon was kept cool until we cooked it in a cooler and the pancakes were the instant just add water kind.
Maggie introduced us to everyone else at camp. And then I finally got a chance to talk to Nicole. "How are you doing?" She asked me.
"Alright, I guess. The zombie apocalypse started and I didn't die right away." I smiled. "I'm so happy you're safe. I don't know what I'd do without my best friend." I gave her a hug, she hugged me back. I knew to cherish these moments while I still had them because pretty soon my life would be a living hell.
