We walked for about an hour before we heard someone screaming through the trees. "HELP!" they said. "SOMEONE, PLEASE, HELP!"
The four of us to took off running through the trees. We found the source of the voice two minutes later. Someone was trying to fend off ten zombies alone. Angel, Mark, Will, and I all readied our weapons and we helped kill the zombies. "AARGH!" I heard someone scream. I turned to see Angel fall to the ground with her hand over her throat. Blood started to seep through her fingers. The rest of us killed off the rest of the zombies.
We walked over to Angel. She was crumpled and the ground and was losing blood fast. "Leave me." Angel said in a raspy voice, blood squirted out of her wound as she talked.
"If we leave her she will become a zombie," Will said. "We need to kill her now. It's just easier that way." Will lifted his gun and he shot Angel in the head twice. Angel laid on the ground in silence, not moving.
I flipped her limp body over carefully and I pulled off her backpack. We all stood in the still silence for a few moments. "Who are you?" Mark said, breaking the silence.
"I'm Ian," the man said. "Thank you for saving me. My wife and son ran somewhere in that direction." Ian pointed behind him. "I told them to so they wouldn't get hurt. They have all of our survival gear, too."
"I'm Claudia. This is Mark and Will. Mark, Will come over here please." I said. I took a few steps away from Ian until he was out of earshot, they followed. "We should ask if they want to join us. If they already have gear we don't need to share too much with them and our numbers are getting low. The more people we have the better. What are your thoughts on this?"
"I think," Mark said. "That you're right. Will, what do you think?"
"We should ask if they want to join us," Will said. We all walked back over to Ian.
"Would you like to band together with us?" I asked.
"Sure. But, we are going to find my wife and kid. Right?" Ian said.
"Of course," Mark said. "Let's get going now."
We started to walked in the direction that Ian said his wife and child went. "What are their names?" Will asked Ian.
"Madelyn and Camden," Ian responded. Ian ruffled his brown, shoulder length hair.
Five minutes later we found a kid who looked to be as out eight sitting on the ground, tear streaks on his face. He had two backpacks sitting by him.
"Cam!" Ian said. "Where's your mom?"
"An tall, blonde lady took her." Camden said. "The lady punched that tree." Camden pointed to a tree that was now lying on the ground with a fist sized dent in it.
I looked at Mark and Will. We all had the same expression on our faces. We knew what happened to Madelyn.
"Why do you all have that look on your faces?" Ian asked.
"We think we know what happened to Madelyn," I said.
"What?! What happened?!" Ian look genuinely upset.
"The people who took her. They have superhuman abilities. They look for other people who they believe are strong enough, both physically and mentally, to be one of them." I explained.
"H-How do you know this?" Ian asked.
"They took me," I said.
"Daddy, is Mommy going to be ok?" Camden asked.
"I hope so, Cam, I hope so." Ian said, he wrapped his arm around Camden. "Do you know where they would of taken her?" Ian looked at us.
"They had a location in Yellowknife," Mark said. "But they probably have some place closer."
"How are we going to find her?" Ian asked. "It's not like they left a path leading directly to where they went."
Suddenly lightning cracked across the sky. Rain poured down through the trees. "We need to get to cover," I said. Thunder rumbled overhead.
We ran for what felt like ever before we reached a town. We ducked into a house for cover. "What town is this?" Will asked.
"I'm not sure," I said. "Dawson couldn't of been that close, could it?"
"We can worry about what town this is later," Ian said. "We need to focus on finding my wife."
"Ian," I said. "If there's no trace of where she went then we don't have a chance of finding her. I'm not saying to just not look, but we need a start as to where she went."
"How did you guys get out?" Ian asked.
"After they took me, they went and captured all my friends." I said. Mark and Will nodded their heads. "One of the people who was a superhuman herself helped us to get out."
"Why don't we sleep here for the night then tomorrow we'll try to come up with a way to save Madelyn," Will said.
"What do you have in your backpacks?" I said, looking at Ian.
"Water, food, warmer clothes, necessities." Ian said. "I'm guessing the same for you?"
"Yeah," Mark said.
We all ate granola bars for dinner. "Who can take watch?" I said.
"I can," Will said.
"I will, too." Ian said.
"I'm heading up to bed then," I said. Mark and Camden agreed with me.
"Mark can you look to see if there is a bedroom with two beds so Cam isn't alone?" Ian said.
"Sure," Mark said.
The three of us went up the steps to go to bed. I went in the first room to the left of the stairs. Mark and Cam found a two bed bedroom two doors down.
I set my stuff on the ground and I got into bed. I laid there listening to the ran patter against the window. I couldn't help but think that we forgot to do something. I couldn't remember exactly what. I realized what it was we forgot when I heard a scream.
