I woke up the next morning to Angel shaking me awake. "Come with me," Angel whispered. I got out of bed and followed Angel down the stairs. She led me into the kitchen and out to the back yard. It was freezing cold outside.
"What are we going?" I said. I rubbed my arms with my hands to try and keep warm.
"Just follow me," Angel responded. She walked over to a small fire. "We're going to make breakfast for everyone. And, before you ask, it has to be outside because there's no electricity inside."
"Can I at least go get a jacket?" I asked.
"If you can't survive ten minutes, fine." Angel said.
I ran inside and quietly crept up the steps. I got my jacket and I put it on. I was outside a minute later.
Angel had instant pancake mix, water, a spatula, and a pan sitting beside her. I walked over and knelt down beside her. "You're going to hold the pan I'll pour the pancake mix in and flip it. We'll take turns until we have eleven pancakes made up." Angel said.
It took us about a half hour to make all eleven pancakes. When we were done we took them all inside. In the living room everyone else was up. Or at least I thought everyone was up. "Hey guys," I said as I walked into the living room. Then I realized who was missing. "Where's Will?"
"I don't know," Mark said, his voice cracked as he was trying to keep his voice steady and fight off tears. "Last night we were both lying in bed and I drifted off to sleep. Then this morning the window was open and he was gone."
"What's going on?" Angel asked as she walked into the room, the pan of pancakes in her hand.
"Will's missing," I quickly informed her.
"Why!? Why can't we ever just be a calm group trying to survive peacefully!? Why as soon as an apocalypse starts every bad thing that can happen will happen!? Someone better get Will back into this house right now or else there's going to be blood on my hands! And, I don't mean fake blood!" Angel practically yelled, the pancakes almost flying out of the pan from her thrashing her arms.
I grabbed the pan before we had pancakes as wallpaper and carpeting. Suddenly, someone burst open the door making the pancakes now in my hand fly up in the air, and back in the pan.
I turned to see who it was. A man was dragging Will in the door by a rope secured around his neck. It took me a minute to realize Will wasn't moving. Or breathing. "This," the man said in a raspy voice. "Is what happens when people poke their nose where it doesn't belong." He threw Will's body on the ground as if it were a piece of trash. Mark let out a small shriek. "He is not dead yet, I wanted to kill him in front of you. Maybe then you'll learn to keep your noses out of things that don't include you."
The man lifted a knife to the side of Will's neck. Mark went crazy at the site of this. He spirited forward and jumped on the man. He stumbled backward. Mark wrenched the knife out of his hand and put it toward the man's throat. The man lifted his hand to grab the knife but Mark sliced his hand open. The man let out a slight cry but kept trying to restrain Mark all the same. The man swung his bloody hand and punched Mark hard in the face. Mark just clung on to the man tighter. Mark swung his free arm and punched the man. The man was stunned was for a few seconds. Mark took these seconds and managed to get the knife across the man's throat. "You will pay," the man said in his last seconds of life, blood pouring down his neck.
"No one," Mark said as he got off the man. "Messes with my boyfriend or I." Mark threw the knife on the ground. Mark sat down beside Will. He set his head in his lap. "He's in a coma. I don't know what kind but he's definitely not dead." A few tears fell down Mark's face. I couldn't tell whether they were relief that Will was alive or sadness of him being in a coma.
"Let me see him," Shane said. "I used to be an EMT." Shane walked over to Will and Mark and knelt down beside them. Shane checked his pulse. "His heart is moving slowly. And I don't see any injuries on him. He is still breathing, very shallowly, the slightest injury in the wrong area could kill him."
"Do you know how to get him out of the coma?" Mark asked.
"I've heard of this type of coma. It requires a drug called Cathulyn to cure it. Some of the side effects are nose bleeds, diarrhea, migraines, and nausea. Just to name a few." Shane said.
"Where can we get it?" Mark asked.
"Most hospitals have a small amount for emergencies." Shane said.
"Where's the nearest hospital?" Mark asked. He brushed some of Will's hair out of Will's eyes.
Angel pulled out the map from one of the bags lying on the floor. "About ten miles east of here," she said.
"Half of use should go and have should stay with Will," I said.
"I obviously have to go, I know what to look for." Shane said.
"There is no way I'm leaving Will!" Mark said.
"Cam and Ian will stay here," Madelyn said. "I'll go with you guys."
"I'll go," Angel and I both said at the same time. "I'm going to pass around pancakes," Angel added, taking the pan from me.
"I'll go, too." Kristen said.
"That's five going, six staying. We can head out today, those of us who are going." I said. While we ate our pancakes Angel and I discussed the best route to get to the hospital.
When everyone finished eating I made the announcement to get ready to go. "Gather what we're going to need. Everyone who's going, have your weapon and jacket ready. We leave in five minutes." I said.
The five of us left armed and ready. We weren't going to let anything stop us from saving Will, well at least I wasn't.(A/N) Hey guys! I just wanted to clarify one thing; I didn't take that picture. I found it on Google. Thank you for reading my story and have a wonderful day!
