Before It Happened

I was in school when the principal starting talking over the speaker system. "THE SCHOOL IS ON LOCK DOWN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! NO ONE IS TO LEAVE THEIR CLASS ROOM FOR ANY REASON! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! I REPEAT THIS IS NOT A DRILL!" he said.
Everyone almost immediately started asking our teacher what was going on. He said he had no idea what was going on and it wasn't in the way that teachers say it when their not supposed to tell students he sounded like he honestly had no idea.
I hid my phone under my desk and texted my older sister Maggie. Since she was in 12th grade and I was only in 10th I thought maybe they would have told her what happened.

Me: Hey, do you know why the school's on lock down?

Maggie: No. Do you?

Me: No

I looked up from my phone to see my teacher on the wall phone. He hung it up. "I can't get through to the office, everyone must be calling," he said.
The speaker came on again. It was the principal. He said, "Everyone put on the news to understand what is going on."
Oh no... I thought. If it's already on the news it can't be good. I waited for Mr. McConaway, the teacher to turn on the tv, we all turned towards it.

" -are invading the area fast," the reporter said.
It switched to an overhead view of downtown. I heard screaming. There were people running from what appeared to be zombies. Then one of the zombies bit a human, they all crowded around to get a taste of the freshly spilled blood.
It immediately cut back to the news reporter. She said, "The disease started from the wrong chemical being put into a batch of flu shots. Patients who received the shot would puke blood and their skin would start to deteriorate. A doctor who managed to get the hold of a zombie by luring it with raw animal meat found flesh in its teeth and that its organs were deteriorating too."
"Wow," my friend, Nicole whispered to me. I shushed her and continued to listen to the reporter.
"The disease is spread by receiving scratches or bites from a zombie. There is no known cure yet, but doctors have begun research. Everybody stay safe and enjoy your day," the reporter said.
Mr. McConaway  turned off the tv. I decided to text Maggie again.

Me: Did you see the news report?

Maggie: Yeah. Claudia, you're ok right.

Me: Yeah. You?

Maggie: Yeah, I'm alright.

I set my phone done and turned to Nicole. "What are we going to do?" I asked her.
"I don't know, just promise me we'll stick together."
That's when I heard a scream and the tv hadn't been turned back on.
