Emily POV
The loud ring of my alarm went off at 6:45 waking me from my dream. A dream I never wanted to wake up from, a dream where I saw Alison. I dreamt about the time we kissed, in the library at school. It was junior year (the year before Ali went missing) and I'd known for a while that I had feelings for her. At the time I couldn't admit it to myself, but now I know the truth.
I remember every second of that moment. She was sat leaning against the book shelf, looking as perfect as ever, reading great expectations. I sat beside her and we talked about a dream I had had the night before, it was a dream about Jenna. The summer before junior year something terrible happened. Something we did, something we were all involved in and someone else got the blame. Jenna Marshall, a girl quite clearly not scared of Ali, she was effected the most.
It was a summer night and we were all hanging out at Spencer's trying on clothes, singing, laughing and having a great time, when Alison saw someone looking through the window. "Toby Cavanaugh, ew he's such a creep" she shouted which brought our fun to an abrupt halt. She told us he was spying through the window and that he needed to be taught a lesson. We were apprehensive but still agreed to Ali's plan thinking it was just harmless fun to scare him off, but that quickly changed. We got to Toby's barn and Alison threw a firecracker through the window, thinking there was no one inside, but there was; Jenna. The firecracker caught alight and the barn exploded into flames, we all quickly fled from the scene realising what we had done was a crime. We didn't realised anyone was inside till we saw later that night on the news, Jenna lost her eyesight that night, and Toby was blamed. The guilt of what we did that night will always haunt me.
Anyways, I dreamt that Jenna got her sight back and forgave us for everything. She was happy again. When I told Alison what I had dreamt about she looked at me and smiled that smile that made my stomach all fuzzy and said "that's why I love you Em" and then she kissed me. It was nothing like I'd ever felt before, nothing like id ever felt with Ben or anyone. I was so hopelessly and madly in love with her I couldn't even admit it to myself. And that dream was a memory of Alison I would never ever forget.
My alarm rang again, and I finally decide to get up and get ready for school. I shower, get dressed and eat breakfast. I leave the house at about 8:35 and start biking to school. I dreaded going past the Dilaurentis house every single day because it reminded me of her. Mrs D had it put up for sale a few months ago but it only sold recently. Today was the day our new neighbours were moving in.
I biked past and saw boxes and boxes full of Alison's old things, it brought a tear to my eye so I stopped to have a look. Old pictures, dusty old books, and teddies filled each of the boxes and reminded me of her more than ever.
"You want that" a kind but unfamiliar voice spoke behind me.
"Maya St Germain, aka the new girl" she said with a smile.
"Oh hi, Welcome to the neighbourhood, I'm Emily""That stuff was in my room, you can take anything you want"
"Oh it belonged to Alison, she was my friend"
"Was? That's all I get"
"There were five of us, we all used to hang out but now we don't."
We all drifted apart after Ali went missing. It was hard for all of us, Alison was the reason we were all friends. Aria moved to Iceland, and me and the other girls kind of just drifted apart. We smile when we walk past each other in school but it's nothing like it used to be, and that's okay, but I miss them sometimes. I miss how it used to be.Maya changed the conversation quickly, obviously realising it was a touchy subject. "Would it be totally outrageous of me to ask you for a hand with the last few boxes?" She asked.
"Yes" I reply obviously kidding but I don't think she got the joke. "But I don't mind" I quickly added. She smiled at me and we both grabbed a box. I walked through the house. Through Alison's house, it was the first time I'd been in there in a very long time and it was weird. But good weird, it reminded me of all our crazy sleepovers and slumber parties, which made me smile inside. We got to Maya's room and I put the box on the floor.
"So how come you aren't still friends with the girl who used to live here?" She asked clearly intrigued.
"Wow, you ask a lot of questions!" I replied not wanting to give her a real answer.
"Well yeah, how else am I supposed to get to know you"
"There you go, another question"
"Fine, your go. Ask me anything"
I looked around, trying to think of something to ask. "Is that your boyfriend?" I asked pointing to a picture that was on her dresser.
"His names Justin"
"He's cute"
"He's also 300 miles away"
"My boyfriends called Ben"
"What's he like?"
"He's a swimmer, like me"
"Oh you can totally tell, you have a swimmers body"
I smiled and blushed. I felt bad leaving her to unpack all of these boxes by her self so I offered to help after school. "That would be great, thank you Emily!" She replied. I said bye and showed myself out. I got on my bike and continued my journey to school. I arrived and saw a familiar face that I was definitely not expecting.
