The days flew past them like a leaf in a cool breeze.

The brothers did senseless talks about trade, women and other irrelevance. They somehow have to cover the fact that they weren't ambassadors. It worked very well the king liked their company.

Cassie spend nearly every night with Elijah. Because of her soothing voice he never had nightmares again. Sometimes they just talked, sometimes she read for him. She enjoyed listening to his stories about the world. Curiously she asked hundreds of questions. She hated the fact the she could never satisfy her thirst for knowledge because of her position as a whore. Even here the thought that women shouldn't learn about science, politics, art, history and current events was stuck in men's heads. She was incredibly thankful that he shared his knowledge with her.

Of course she knew that something was odd about Elijah. When he attacked her he was unnaturally fast. From time to time he just disappeared...and when he came back his body seemed to bristle with power. Und sometimes he talked about events way back in the past as if he had been there himself. It fascinated her.

But she ignored it. She didn't wanted to destroy what they had.

Was there something to shatter? Nothing physical happened between them and she always had the feeling as if he pushed her away. Just once...

Again she slept in his bed and when they woke up they were laying closely, his arm around her waist and their legs tangled. She felt his calm breath in her hair.

Then they looked in each others eyes and Cassie felt nothing but desire. His hazel eyes seemed to burn when he bended his head a slight bit forward to bring their faces close.

Cassie closed her eyes and opened her lips in expectation.

And then he was suddenly gone. She heard the door slam shut. Then she allowed herself to cry. The rejection clawed itself around her heart.

...

Elijah hadn't talked to her since that incident. He had lost control. But he had sworn himself that he wouldn't shatter her life to piece with the darkness he carried around.

He missed her presence. He wanted to have her with him. From that on he was haunted. First he imagined how he was holding her in his arms and kissed her. The smile lit her face up. But when he fell asleep a terrible nightmare developed from his imagination. She was now lifeless in his arms. Her blood was all over him, her neck was in an odd angle...Normally he awoke at this point heavily sweating.

His dreams never lied. He couldn't love her, it would kill the lovely young woman.

But he didn't reckoned on a small, blonde, stubborn force.

One night she hammered with her little fists against the wooden door. She was run out of patience. When Elijah opened and looked at her as he was holding something back she threw her plan to yell at him and then talk out of her head.

She eyed him up and down. He was just wearing his pants. She must have caught him changing.

From one second to the next he lifted her on his hips and she wrapped her legs around him. The kiss was different from what he imagined. He had dreamt of a soft touching of their lips. But this kiss was filled with passion and hunger. He instantly fell in love with the way she kissed. All the retained energy discharged. It was the contrary to all the cold emotions he had experienced. It was like a fire that would scorch them.

There was no doubt in what would happen next.

He left the Gentleman standing outside the door when he turned around and laid he down at the bed.
