Watching your own funeral is horrible.
All the people you loved stay there and cry, knowing that they'll never see you again.
Cassie experienced everything. She heard the priest words. They were so generalized, it could've fit for everyone. But it wasn't a surprise. She wasn't one of the high born families. She wasn't a Mikaelson. Just a lonely girl that came to the city to have a good time.
Now it was the city she died in.
But she died because of love, maybe it was a good way to die.
No.
Even though she lived for over a century and was praised with dying still in a young and beautiful shape, she wasn't ready here. She had just caught a glimpse of happiness when she got together with Elijah.
Cassie yelled and screamed at the scene she watched but now one heard her. Not even Elijah who just stood there with a blank space.
She had heard rumors of „The Other Side" where all dead supernatural creatures are forced to watch their loved ones forever. It came to her mind that she now kind of understood why Esther went crazy. To see all the pain, all the suffering her children endured and of course the crimes they did, was one of the worst things that could happen to a mother.
Looking around, Cassie tried to find out if she was all alone here. If it was possible that she could see others here, this cemetery would be perfect. It was out of question that other supernatural creatures were buried here.
But it seemed like she was all on her own. The only thing she could see was her loved ones attempting to leave her funeral. They suddenly were stopped by Elijah, his angry voice was ripping her out of her thoughts.
She listened to his brutal honest speech. It made her feel miserable. That was not the man she loved. He was out of his mind because of his grief.
It was impossible to bring her back. Even if he tried to, it would have wicked consequences.
Was this what she was supposed to see for the rest of eternity? Her husband, lashing out in pain? Or him, moving on, finding a new love?
Of course she wished that he would heal from the pain he endured. But needless to say it would be hard to see him with another woman.
Before she followed after Elijah's trails, she looked down to her hand. Her ring. He had put it back on her finger. She smiled. This gesture meant everything for her.
...
Two years passed.
Two years in which Cassie was forced to watch Elijah.
Two years in which Elijah hasn't moved on.
But still, he wasn't a step nearer to bring her back. No witch would help him. He promised them land, money, to their slave of dirty work but it wasn't enough.
Over this time Elijah's heart has grown to stone. The moral, loving man was turned into the opposite.
He slaughtered entire covens of witches because they didn't help him. Every witch on this earth shivered in fear by the sound of his name. They hid from him. And he made it his task to find every last one of them, until one coven chose to resurrect Cassie.
His family helped him but not stopping him and kept his back for him to travel to world to find the witches.
And they took care of their parents. Esther was killed by their oldest sister Freya, that awoke from her slumber.
Mikael also wasn't a problem anymore. For Freya they put a dagger through his heart and hid him, but he was still alive.
Elijah would care about this when he got Cassie back.
The day came that changed everything. He had travelled to Eastern Europe where a coven with an old tradition asked for his help. It stroke his mistrust, it seemed just to easy.
But he didn't care at this point. He could even understand, the people in Eastern Europe weren't as careless about the supernatural as humans in western states were. They always had a sense for the creatures and so they threatened the witches and cut them from their magical sources, old relicts of the country.
They just asked for him to kill the people that turned against them, get the relicts and give them a home in New Orleans, where they could freely practice their magic. In return, they would resurrect Cassie when they're in charge of their whole power.
And so he did what they wanted. It worked quite easily. The hardest part was to argue with Niklaus about bringing a potentially dangerous coven of witches to his city.
But after bringing up their ancient vow, his younger brother gave him. His family just wanted the old Elijah back and they all knew that was just possible with Cassie at his side.
The witches performed their ritual at the cemetery where his wife was buried. It was very dark, it included lots of blood, dead animals, bones and chanting.
Elijah didn't cared about what he did. He didn't saw it as a mistake, he just saw the joy in seeing his lost love again.
It would be the stop to his dull, pathetic life without her.
...
Cassie didn't recognize him the way he was now. As she saw what he did the last two years, she grew more and more desperate about the fact that she couldn't punch some reason into him.
Was he really that stupid to trust a coven of shady witches after erasing half their species?
It was simply too easy. There must be a catch. And old Elijah would've noticed it.
But she knew that he became blind for it when he saw hope to bring her back. She already had given up. At first, she watched thrilled as Elijah asked witches to help him. He did everything he could, but at some point, he did even more. Too much. This wasn't going to end well. It was breaking him apart and at some point it would shatter the connection to his family.
Cassie admired how strong the rest of the family had stayed. They helped Elijah but still got to hold the peace in New Orleans. Even though a long list of new enemies raised as Elijah went on his vendetta.
Of course they had no idea how they could rescue him from careless moves. He was being too deep down in the dark hole.
They realized that the only chance was to get Cassie back.
This time, it seemed to work.
