Lili's POV:

We walked out of the door hand in hand and we were greeted by 2 men who signalled for us to follow them through the vast network of corridors and into a large room that I imagined was used for functions and events (not that I could imagine vampires did very often). I looked at Nathan to see what he was doing and he was just taking it all in but his tense jaw line and his lips that were drawn into a thin line suggested to me that he was nervous and unhappy.

Within the room stood around 100 other people who were crowded around the sides of the room. At the centre of it all was a rather irritated looking Lucas who stood behind a small table. Upon the table was a large, beautifully intricate, gold chalise and along side it was a slim knife. It was clear as to what I had to do but at the same time there seemed to be a million things that could go wrong.

As I walked towards Lucas with the ends of my dress bundled up in my shaking, pale hands, I felt the weight of everyone's eyes upon me. I wondered what they thought of me, their next leader, whether they thought I was strong and powerful or just a little girl with big powers that she couldn't even use properly yet. However, my moment in the spotlight was only brief before they turned their attention to Nathan. I could imagine why, it was only a few days ago when he was an outsider, the goody two shoes that they hated, not only that but he was a prisoner too and now here he stood, next to the girl who was about to become the leader. It was quite a big change and I don't imagine the clan members were too pleased. We were walking towards the centre of the room but suddenly a thought struck me and I pulled Nathan aside.

"I don't want you to drink from the cup." I told him so quietly, human ears wouldn't be able to pick it up but I knew he could however I was very quiet so that no one else would be able to hear it either. His forehead creased in confusion as he thought about what I had told him.

"Why not?" He asked, he didn't understand what I was asking of him and to be honest I don't really know either. Something felt wrong, being here, surrounded by so many dark vampires felt wrong to me. I didn't understand why but I felt the need to protect Nathan even though I don't know what from.

"I don't want you to be tied here or to me. I want you to be able to leave if you want to." I replied, I so desperately wanted to avert my gaze but I didn't want to look at anyone else but him.

"You know I would never leave you, no matter what happens." He sounded so secure in what he believed in, so confident and it put me at ease.

"Please just don't drink from the cup." I pleaded, it all felt wrong and I was trying my best to not involve Nathan as much as I could.

"I just don't understand... Why shouldn't I?" He looked curious but like he knew something I didn't at the same time. It was like suddenly, he was filled with confidence and curiously unlike before when he seemed defeated.

"I know, just don't... For me." I titled my head down to look at the floor but then felt it being lifted up by a gentle hand to an angle that I would be looking at Nathan.

"Okay, whatever you want but know that I will never leave you." He leaned forward and kissed my cheek, I knew he wanted to do more but we were surrounded by people so he reluctantly left it at that.

"I know." I admitted, I trusted Nathan and I knew that he wasn't one to mess girls about, when he said he was in it for the long run, unless the girl does something unforgivable then he definitely will stick to his word. I tore my gaze away from Nathan and turned around to face Lucas and then I walked forward into the centre of the room, Nathan trailing behind me.
