"Can you pass me that box?"
"What in the—"
Ethan walked into the bookstore to see boxes, each filled with books, piled high around the cashier counter.
"Big stock shipment. Biggest one of the year."
"Holy shit, do you need help with any of this?"
"No, I think I g—"
Travis's grip slipped on the box he was holding. The box hit the floor with a thunk, and, miraculously, nothing spilled out.
"Okay, you need help with them."
Ethan took the box Travis had just dropped off of the floor.
"Where do you want them?"
"Top of the box. Teen Fiction, if you will. Just put it on the ground next to the other ones."
Travis inched a little closer to Ethan.
"Also, you might want to hide your face. My boss is over there."
Ethan nodded and made his way to the back of the store. When he reached the other boxes, he saw a rather plump old man in a collared shirt and tweed vest ordering around other employees.
The man noticed Ethan and raised his eyebrows.
"And who are you, young man?"
"I'm helping my—"
"Not what you're doing. What's your name?"
"E-Ethan?"
"That sounds like a question."
"Ethan. My name is Ethan, sir."
The man circled Ethan and fiddled with his bowtie.
"I could use a strong set of arms like you back in storage."
"You're wanting to hire me?"
"...Precisely so."
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm leaving for colle—"
Travis walked by with a box. Realizing who Ethan was talking to, he dropped his box next to the others and hurried by Ethan's side.
"Mr. Manques, what are you doing?"
"I see you met Ethan, my boyfriend."
Travis and the boss started at each other, both shooting daggers.
The man in the vest sighed in slight defeat and started to walk away.
"If you ever need a place to work, you know who to talk to, Mr. Ethan."
