First loves are magical and unpredictable and exciting. Mitch loved the feeling of being in love. Being so completely head over heels for someone that they're all you think about and every second of everyday, his thoughts were about Scott. His lanky, goofy, adorable boyfriend, Scott. God, he was so in love.

It was the kind of all encompassing love that made Mitch want to do nothing but love him. That's why winter break was so hard on him. He imagined he and Scott would go on lots of cute, wintery dates, snuggling up with hot chocolate and watching Christmas movies until they dozed off sharing peppermint flavoured kisses. Christmas was a special time of year and he wanted nothing more than to spend it with his love. But that's not what was happening at all.

His parents decided he saw enough of Scott during term time that the break would be spent drowning in family time. Mitch thought that was bullshit because he saw his family all the time, they lived together. There was no getting out of it, though, and Mitch really did love his family so he subjected himself to endless board games and agonising charades for as long as he possibly could.

But by Christmas Eve, he was going crazy. If he had to bake one more gingerbread man with his mother or attempt ice hockey with his dad one more time, he was going to cry. And not just from the large, unsightly bruise forming on his thigh from a rogue puck flying full force at his skinny, little twink leg. He wasn't entirely convinced Sean, one of Mitch's classmates whose dad happened to be friends with Mitch's, hadn't done on it purpose. He had always been jealous of Scott and Mitch's relationship but Mike made him brush it off and pulled him away before he could confront the wicked brunette with the smug smile and evil glint in his eye.

"Can I go see Scott now?" Mitch asked for the millionth time today.

"Mitch," Mike sighed, climbing into the car to take them home. "It's Christmas Eve, it's family time."

"Daaaad," he whined. "This entire break has been family time. I just want to see him for a couple of hours."

"No, we're going to the movies like we always do then you're going to bed or Santa won't come."

"I'm 17, not 7, I know Santa's not real."

Mike whipped his head round to look at Mitch before turning back to the road, sheer horror on his face. "What?! Who told you that? I can't believe it, he doesn't believe in Santa anymore! Where's my little boy gone?"

Mitch laughed lightly, "I haven't been your little boy for quite sometime now. That's why it's time for change. You, mom and Jessa can go to the movies and I'll go see Scott, win-win."

Mike let out a long breath, humour gone from his face. "You know I don't like to put my foot down but I'm going to have to. You are not going to see Scott tonight. And just so you know, you'll always be my little boy."

"But that's not fair."

"Life's not fair."

"But-"

"It's not happening, sorry, Mitch."

Mitch then proceeded to sulk all evening. Well he tried to anyway but he ended up having a really great time with his family. He felt festive and merry and maybe a little childish for being stroppy about not getting to see his boyfriend. He was one hundred percent in the Christmas spirit but the one thing that would make him completely joyous would be seeing Scott. He had to make do with texting him non stop despite the pointed glares he would get from his mom periodically.
