chapter Eighteen

"cheogi-yo, gwenchanahyo? [Hey there, are you okay?]"He said cautiously so as not to scare the already distressed girl. She seemed to still instantly before slowly lifting her head and turning to face him.

The look on the face that gazed back at Min woo will forever been ingrained into his mind. His heart felt like it was being wringed so tight that it physically hurt just looking in the eyes that stared back at him.

When she recognised who he was, he registered shock in her eyes before two big drops of tears rolled down her face. The sight of the tears falling on her cardigan jerked him into action because it felt like they were falling on his heart. Forgetting his own troubles, Min woo took two quick strides to cover up the distance between him and Rebekka,

"Rebekka, what is wrong?" he asked with his hands on her shoulder and his face full of compassion. But instead of replying, Rebekka just started shaking uncontrollably as a new wave of tears filled her eyes.

"she's........she's..." sobs escaped Rebekka's mouth as she tried to put into words her pain.

"who's what Rebekka?" Min woo urged her to speak as he worries continued to build up.

"She's..." Then in a whisper as more tears fell, "she's gone.....Rona is dead"with the tears, she also seemed to lose all her inner strength as her knees gave way. Automatically, Min woo gently pulled her to his chest and held her close as she soaked his cardigan with her tears. He knew she need time to let the emotions out so he didn't pester her to find out what happened. Instead he just whispered soothing words in her hair and tried to channel as much of his strength to her as he could. He had never seen this usually strong hearted girl so broken and it pained him to know that there was something or someone in this world who could hurt her this much. As the minutes ticked by, Min woo could feel her jerking start to lessen and little by little, her sobs also started to quieten. When he was sure that she could stand by herself, he pulled back and steered her towards one of the grey benches that was situated in the middle of the roof. Rebekka didn't protest and she seemed to be working on automatic. Still not wanting to push her into saying anything, Min woo just sat with her and watched her as she gazed off into the distant night sky. Every now and then a tear would silently roll down her cheeks but she didn't say a word. She was silent for so long that he was starting to think she wouldn't say anything, but right then,

"Am I that bad a person?" Rebekka asked in a small controlled voice still looking into the night.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because everyone or anything that comes close to me, gets destroyed or taken away, so surely there must be something that I am doing wrong."

Min woo had been told by Mi-hi about Rebekka's best friend (Rona) having cancer and his heart had automatically gone out to her. Knowing how much it must've killed her not being able to be with her friend during her last days, but it hadn't crossed his mind that she would blame herself for it.

" Rebekka, you shouldn't put the blame on yourself. No one caused Rona to have cancer, it was not in anyone's control."

"yeah, but I should've been there!.....she was my best friend but she died and I was there for her......and what makes it worse is that I blamed her for it. I blamed her for leaving me when in fact I was the one that left her first. Even when she told me she was ill I didn't rush to her side like a good friend would've. Instead I put my stupid responsibilities before her life only to up wake and realise it's too late!"Rebekka's sobs grew louder
