Nancy left to go to Jonathan's house. Steve frantically searched his house for flashlights.
"Who's Mike?" I asked.
He looked at me for the first time in 20 minutes. He's been so caught up in killing something, I'm guessing the monster.
"It's her little brother. The monster took him. You should go home, lock up, and don't bleed. Be careful."
"Don't bleed?"
"Blood attracts the monster. You want to avoid the monster, don't you?"
"Of course."
We both stood for a moment. I contemplated what was happening.
"Why are you getting involved in this?" I asked.
"I helped kill it last time. It was me, Jonathan and Nancy. Jonathan's brother, Will, was the first one taken."
"I want to go with you." I can't believe I just said that...
"No, you're not."
"Yes, I am."
"Are you crazy? You haven't seen this thing. It's dangerous."
"I don't care. I'm going with you."
"Listen, gorgeous", he stepped closer and put one arm around my waist and stroked my lower back, "I refuse to let you put yourself in danger. Remember when I told you I'd protect you?"
I nodded.
"This is me protecting you. So go home, lock everything and be extremely careful." He guided me to the door.
"Steve, I want to be there to protect you too." I tried to escape being pushed out the front door.
"I don't need you to protect me. I need to know you're safe. Okay?"
I nodded, in agreement. I kissed him goodbye and turned to leave. I heard him close the door behind me. Quietly, I walked to the side of his house and peered in the window. He was towards the back of his house, rummaging through drawers.
Here's my chance.
I speed-walked to his car and checked the door. Thankfully, it was unlocked. I crawled into the backseat and slid under an old jacket and towel.
Now, I had to wait.
