After explaining what Dr. Owens told me, we chose to give up for the day, then try again tomorrow. Jonathan dropped off the boys first.

"Do you mind dropping me off a little before my house? My parents are going to ask too many questions if they see..." I rambled, but was cut off.

"Got it." Jonathan answered.

--------

Jonathan did as I asked, dropping me off a few houses away from my home. If my parents asked, I walked home from Max's house.

As I neared closer to my house, I noticed a figure leaning on my mail box. The closer I got, the more recognizable he was. His blonde hair glistened in the sunset.

"Hey there blondie." Billy greeted with the rasp in his voice. He blew smoke from his mouth and held his cigarette in his hand.

"Uh, hi?" I spoke, uncertain of his intention.

"I've been feelin stressed. I want another night of forgetting." He took his cigarette back in his mouth.

"I think that was more of a one time thing for me. I'm not that kind of girl."

"But you can be." He stepped closer and put his hand on my waist. His face inched closer to me, but I pushed him away.

"I'm not doing this again, Billy." I argued.

"Oh come on," he tried to lean in again and held my waist close to him.

Again, I pushed at his chest. "Get away from me." I whined.

His grip only tightened.

"Hey! Leave her alone!" Steve's voice comforted me. I already felt relieved, but Billy still held his grip on me.

"Back off, Harrington. This isn't your battle." He spat.

Steve stepped closer to Billy. "You don't come to my town, take over my school, and steal my girl. Now you back off." He gritted through his teeth.

Billy loosened his grip and eventually let me go. "What are you gonna do about it?" He got up into his face and spat. Steve swung his arm and punched Billy's face. His face tightened and he hit Steve back.

"Guys, stop!" I yelled

"Guys, stop!" I yelled. Before either of them could throw another punch, I stood in between them. I faced Billy and pushed hard on his chest, causing him to back up. "Please," I cried.

"Next time you won't be so lucky, Harrington." Billy licked his bloody lip and headed to his car, then drove away.

Steve and I were alone standing on the sidewalk in front of my house.

"Thank you." I shyly said.

"I heard what you said...about it being a one time thing. So that's where you disappeared to." His tone was frustrated.

"I..." I wanted to explain myself.

"I was worried sick about you. Your parents were worried sick about you. But you're off with Billy the whole time." Hurt and anger were prominent in his voice.

I took a breath, wanting to speak, but not knowing what to say.

"I don't want to be with a girl like that." He backed up, getting closer to his own lawn. "I don't want a girl who gets revenge by reciprocating mistakes."

That final sentence was it for me. "I was not getting back at you! I did that for me! I wanted to make myself feel better!" I argued yelling.

"Well I bet you feel real good about yourself now, don't ya?" He hopelessly turned around and headed toward his house. His bloody face broke my heart.

"Steve," I begged for him to turn around.

He continued to his house then disappeared inside. I was alone.
