In between classes, I stopped at my locker to exchange some books.

A girl was at her locker, which was next to mine. Her hair was dark brown and curled.

I put in my combination and opened my locker.

"Hey, you must be the new girl. I'm Nancy." She said, politely.

"Yeah, I'm Kristen." I introduced myself.

"How's your first day so far?"

"How's your first day so far?"

"Not too bad. It'll take some getting used to."

"Yeah, I can imagine it would. What class do you have next?"

"Bio."

"So do I! I'll show you where the room is."

"Great, thanks!"

She seemed sweet. Maybe I made a friend. I didn't expect to make any friends on my first day.

We walked and made small talk until we entered the classroom.

"There's always an empty seat in back of me. You could sit there." She offered.

"Okay." I placed my books on the desk and put my backpack on the back of my seat.

"This is my boyfriend, Jonathan." She introduced the guy next to her.

"Hi." He had a shy smile. I was surprised she'd be dating him. He seemed...different, based on his clothes and his shy attitude.  He seems more like a loner type.

________

After class, the three of us walked to our lockers together.

"How do you like Hawkins so far?" Jonathan asked.

"I think its okay so far. I was a little uneasy at first."

"Yeah, I understand why."

"Hey, gorgeous." Steve walked over, not noticing I'm in a conversation with other people. He pulled me closer and kissed me. "How's your first day?"

"It's going pretty well." I replied. "Do you know Nancy and Jonathan?" I made it more clear that I was in the middle of talking to them.

"Yeah," he answered, hesitantly. "Hey guys." He fake smiled. I could tell it was a fake one. It wasn't his usual smile.

They smiled back and awkwardly greeted him.

His attention turned back to me. "So, you ready to get out of here? Maybe we'll go out to lunch. The food here isn't that great."

"Sure." I waved goodbye to Nancy and Jonathan, and left school with Steve. I wondered why they were so awkward around each other. Steve didn't seem the same when he saw them. He looked hurt.

I wanted to ask, but I wanted to wait until we were closer and could talk about things like that. I didn't want to rush anything.
