Cal storms out the front doors of the factory into the night.
"Cal," I say, following him. "Where are you going?"
He pays no attention to me as he gets in his car. It's best I stay close to him, so I get into the passenger seat.
"Cal," I repeat. "What are you doing?"
He still doesn't pay attention to me. He just starts his car and starts driving. I can tell he's heading to the apartments. At least he isn't going anywhere else.
"Cal, are you okay?" I ask. "Cal."
He stops the car in the apartment parking lot and gets out. I quickly do the same and follow Cal inside. He storms up the stairs and opens the door to his apartment. He slams it shut I stop it and walk through myself.
"Cal!" I exclaim. "Stop ignoring me."
He starts pacing the floor, running both his hands through his hair. I walk infront of him and stop his pacing.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
He pushes past me and continues to pace. I grab Cal's shoulder and push him on the couch.
"Calm down," I say.
Cal stares at the ground.
"Cal, please," I say. "Talk to me."
He looks up at me and sighs.
"It's been almost four years," he says. "And they still somehow don't trust me. I don't even trust myself sometimes."
"Well, Trauno trusts you," I say. "Sam trusts you. I trust you."
Cal glances at me and sighs again.
"But four years and most people can't."
He cracks his knuckles in frustration. I sigh and put a hand on Cal's face.
"Most people trust you," I say. "How would you become commander if they didn't."
Cal locks eyes with me and I can practically see the anger melting away from his gaze.
"Have I ever told you how much I love you?" he asks.
"Hmm," I say, pretending to think. "Maybe once or twice."
Cal cracks a smile. He grabs my face with both his hands and kisses me.
"How are you able to get me in a better mood all the time?" he asks.
I shrug.
"Just lucky, I guess," I laugh.
Cal chuckles and kisses me again.
"So are you okay now?" I ask.
"Yeah," Cal replies. "Thanks for that."
Cal puts his hand on the side of my neck, making me wince in pain. He quickly removes his hand.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
"Yeah," I reply. "Somebody just stepped on my neck during battle."
"Was it looked at?" Cal questions.
"No, but it's fine."
"No, it's not," he says. "Were you hurt anywhere else?"
"No," I lie.
"You can't lie to a mind reader, Mo," Cal says. "You need to rest so that you can have more strength."
"But I'm-"
"Now," Cal interrupts. "Good night."
"Night," I sigh.
I get up and walk over to my apartment. I leave the door open cause I'll just be in the bathroom then I'll shut it. Yes, I'm lazy. I look at my face in the mirror and scream when I see Avail Firi standing behind me. I spin around but he's gone. I back into the corner and slide onto the ground. I've never felt such fear in my entire life.
I hear footsteps rushing towards where I am and then see Cal appear in the doorway. He rushes towards me and kneels down.
"What happened?" he asks.
"It was him," I say, my voice shaking. I hadn't even noticed tears streaming down my face. "It was him. It was Avail Firi."
"Where is he now?" Cal asks.
"He-he's gone," I stutter.
"It's okay," Cal says. "It's okay. Do you want to stay in here?"
I shake my head vigorously.
"I don't wanna be in here," I say between small sobs.
Cal puts an arm under my legs and his other arm on my back, picking me up. I rest my head on Cal's chest as he carries me out of my apartment and into his. He sits down on his bed and puts me in his lap.
"It's okay, Mo," Cal shushes. "Shh, it's okay."
I wrap my arm around his stomach and put my head in the crook of Cal's neck. He slightly runs his fingers up and down on my arm in a soothing manner. How did Avail Firi get there? How did he find me again? What if he takes me or somebody I love?
"That's not gonna happen, Mo," Cal murmurs, reading my thoughts. "I promise."
My eyelids get heavier and all I can sense is Cal. That's the only thing. I close my eyes and fall into an almost dreamless sleep. The only thing that I dreamt about was seeing Avail Firi behind me.
*×*×*×*
I wake up. I don't completely recall what happened last night but as the light blinds me, it comes back to me. The next thing I notice is that an arm is draped over my waist. Cal's arm, to be exact. He's probably about a fourth awake because he pulls me close to his chest, lightly kissing my hair.
I'd hate to wake him so I don't. That's kinda ruined when Cal's phone starts ringing. After a moment, Cal starts the move around. He removes his arm from around me and looks at his phone. He presses ignore and puts it back down. I turn and look at him. His hair is messy and he looks tired.
"Hey," he murmurs.
"Hi," I reply.
His eyes widen and he runs a hand through his hair.
"Geez, Morgan, sorry," he says. "I just slept with you. Well, not that but in the same bed. Sorry."
"It's all good," I laugh. "Who called you?"
"Unknown number," Cal shrugs.
I sit up and cock my head to the side.
"Strange," I say. "You've never gotten an unknown number."
"It seriously was," Cal says. "Are you okay?"
I know he's talking about what happened last night.
"I don't know," I sigh. "Now I'm sure Avail Firi is still coming after me and I don't want him to hurt anybody."
"He's not gonna," Cal replies. "And I'm not gonna let him hurt you."
