"I don't think I can do this again," I say to Cal.
I just told him about what Trauno said. He's off the drugs and is more like himself.
"I almost got you killed," I say. "What if someone dies because of me?"
"Well, technically, you have killed a lot of people," Cal points out.
"You know what I mean," I roll my eyes.
"Mo, seriously," Cal says. "It'll be different. Everyone will get out of there perfectly safe. Trust me."
A doctor comes up to the door and starts talking.
"Commander Cal has to be in here for another week."
"Oh, come on!" Cal exclaims. "What do you want, money?"
"Three of your ribs are broken and your lung is damaged," the doctor replies. "Not to mention-"
"Okay, okay," he interrupts. "I get it."
I laugh then stand up.
"I'm gonna let you get rest," I say.
"I've been in here for a day," Cal replies. "All I get to do is rest!"
"Don't complain," I roll my eyes. "Honestly, you've been in here for six months. A week isn't that bad."
"I have a right to complain," he says. "I don't have a god coming to heal me."
"Well, he's my half brother, so," I shrug. "Bye."
I walk away and away from the med center. I'm turning a corner and crash into someone. I look up at them. Tristan.
"Um, hi, Morgan," he says.
"Hi," I respond. "Have you been avoiding me?"
"I thought you didn't want me around you," he says.
Sure, his face brings back really bad memories but I miss him around.
"Of course not," I say. "Did anybody tell you about the plans?"
"Yeah," he says. "It's crazy."
"It's our last hope. Fongratch has thousands of soldiers. We'd blend right in."
"Except for the fact that we're trying to kill Fongratch," Tristan says. "The army is going to kill us if Fongratch doesn't kill us first."
"Don't be so pessimistic," I reply. "Nothing bad will happen. I hope."
I say the last part quieter but Tristan still hears me.
"You hope?" he asks. "We can't go off of 'I hope'."
"When I killed Garmin, we were going off of 'I'm gonna die but I don't care'," I reply. "I hope is better than that."
"Either way, I can't go," Tristan says. "I won't be able to kill Fongratch."
"Sure you will," I assure him.
"No I won't. You should get someone else."
"They trained you for a long time and you just wanna back out? Why?"
"I missed Fongratch," Tristan states. "I missed the gigantic beast standing ten yards away."
"That was beginner's unluck," I say. "And if you think your aim is bad, practice. Actually, just practice."
"This is a horrible idea," he says. "You can't rely on me. I'm just a thief and a liar. I belong on the streets stealing money, not fighting in an army and killing a monster."
"There's no backing out of this, Ronnings," I say. "You already said you'd help. You can't get cold feet right now."
"Fine," Tristan says.
He turns towards the training rooms but then looks back at me.
"No promises I can kill him," he says.
"Promises are never true," I reply.
"Hey, do you wanna join me?" Tristan asks.
"Sure, if it gets you to train." I say then follow him into the training room.
"I bet I could beat you fighting," he says as he goes towards the computers.
"I'd like to see you try," I scoff.
"Okay," Tristan says, then cracks his knuckles. "I will."
He places a mat down and gets on it. I step on it, too, then get into a fighting position.
"Come at me, Ronnings," I say.
Tristan leaps forward and swings his fist towards me. Slow. I dodge him and he stumbles forward a bit. He gets back into a fighting position and awaits for me to attack. I swing my fist lower than his was and punch him in the gut. Not that hard, don't worry. Tristan grabs my arm and tries to kick my legs out from beneath me but I get out of his grasp and jump back. I swing my foot and trip him. He falls to the ground and I look down at him.
"You need to move faster," I suggest. "Your training has finished you say?"
"Oh, shut up," Tristan rolls his eyes and gets up. "I bet you weren't any better."
"That's true," I shrug. "But I can shoot lightning."
I get back into fighting postion and Tristan throws a punch. It hits me in the gut and I flinch a little. Let's hope that wasn't his hardest punch.
I'm only being critical of him because he's going up against a monster three times his size.
Tristan tries to kick my legs out from underneath me but I dodge. I swing my fist at his face and he jumps back. I kick him in the gut and he stumbles back a bit. He regains his balance then knocks my feet out from under me. I'm about to jump up but he quickly pins me down.
"So," he says and smirks. "I'm pretty sure I just won."
"I don't think so," I reply then knee him in the crotch.
He winces in pain and that gives me enough time to get up and back into a fighting position.
"That's cruel," Tristan states then gets up.
He gets into another fighting position and strikes a blow to my face. I stumble backward a little and Tristan takes the opportunity to trip me. He quickly pins me down to the ground and holds an imaginary knife to my throat. I use my one free hand to grab Tristan's and turn his imaginary knife towards himself and stab him.
"Looks like I win," I say.
"Touche," Tristan replies then gets up.
"I told you I'd beat you," I say then stand up.
I hear the training room doors open then a soldier comes through.
"We're sending troops towards Fongratch," she says.
"Okay," I reply.
I thought Trauno didn't want to risk any more lives. I bolt out of the training room, Tristan on my tail. I put on some armor then grab my bow and a quiver filled with arrows. I run towards troops and fall in line with them. I was just soon enough. We start moving out towards the south. We go something like a couple miles and then the battle comes into sight.
