Look behind you, sweetheart... (680 words)
---
My mind raced through thoughts, debating whether or not I should call him. Running out of the crowded room, I went outside and grabbed my phone, deciding to call him. I haven't seen him since he was drafted by Arizona back in June and I missed him terribly, as he was down in the Phoenix area with his friend and teammate, Lawson, while I was attending Harvard University in Boston.
My fingers quickly tapped the numbers of his number and pressed the call button, wanting to hear his voice. Bringing the phone up to my ears, I closed the door behind me, not wanting for people to eavesdrop on the conversation.
"Hello?" I heard him answer the phone, before realizing who had called him. "Y/N! How are you, sweetheart?"
"I'm doing alright, thanks for asking. How are you doing?" I smiled, looking down at the ground before looking back up at eye level.
"I miss you, to be honest with you, Y/N." My smile slightly faltered after he confessed his emotions and I nodded my head, knowing that he can't see it anyways.
"I miss you too, Jake. How's hockey down in Arizona?"
"Ugh, don't get me started. We're kind of having a horrible season so far. How's your freshman year at Harvard going?"
"I've been doing well. I have a great roommate, I'm passing my classes, and I've made new friends." I chuckled quietly to myself, "I'm at a New Year's party right now...What are you doing?"
"No way, I'm also at a New Year's party right now!"
"Really? Are you with the team?"
"No, the party is just me and a few friends."
"Oh, you're back in Canada?"
"No, more like somewhere in the Northeast."
"New York?"
"No, but you're close..."
"Philadelphia? Pittsburgh?"
"Now, you've gone outside the box. Just turn around," he hung up the phone call just like that and I turned around, just like he asked me to. Only to see him on the other side of the glass door, standing inside.
Was it just a fantasy or was it a reality? Was he actually in Boston right now?
He opened the door, stepping outside and closed the door behind him, facing me.
"Surprise?" He smiled, opening his arms for me to run into. I walked up to him with tears starting to well up in my eyes.
"Jakob, is that really you?" I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck. Instantly, his reaction was to wrap his arms around my waist.
Nodding his head, he brought his hand up to my cheek, wiping away the falling tears.
"Yes, it is, Y/N," he smiled from ear-to-ear, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear, "you're not dreaming, don't worry."
"I missed you so much, Jake," I laughed, resting my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
Jakob looked into my eyes and he nodded his head, "I missed you too, Y/N."
"What are you doing all the way here in Boston?"
"Can't I surprise my beautiful and intelligent girlfriend on New Year's Eve?"
I laughed once again, shaking my head at my boyfriend's antics. "Well, we do have about ten seconds before the world rings 2017 in..."
We silently counted down the numbers, eagerly wanting 2016 to be over and 2017 to begin. When we got to 2 seconds, Jakob grabbed me by the waist, arms wrapped around it and dipped me.
He pushed his lips against my lips, kissing them gently yet passionately, almost like he was afraid to let go of me. I kissed him back with the same amount of fiery passion, also being afraid to let go of him.
"Happy New Year, Y/N," he whispered, pulling away from the kiss, but our foreheads were still touching. "I love you."
"I love you too, Jakob," I whispered back to him, pulling him back in for another kiss. "Happy New Year to you too, honey."
