It was a very hot summer. I was walking down the hot, dusty gravel road back from town. Two plastics filled with a few groceries to last me just until the end of the month. I lived with my grandmother in my small house. She was very ill and I was the only one who could take care of her. My sisters had their own lives with their husbands and kids. I did not want to burden them by asking them to take grandma in. So I made it my duty to take care of her with the little I have.

At last I arrived. I opened the door and put the plastics on the table.
"Grandmama? I'm back from town."
" How was it dear?"
"Oh it was pretty much the same, busy busy. I bought you a slab of chocolate."

Grandma loves chocolates and although this was my last, I would spend it on her. I loved seeing her happy.

I walked into her room where I found her laying in bed. I smiled and sat beside the bed.

"Here we go, grandma. I know you love it."
I smiled.
"Oh my child, what would I do without you? You are not like the others. You are far too kind. You take exactly after your mom,Lydia."

My mother had died when I was 5 years old. She and dad died, infact. We were driving home from a picnic when it started storming on the road. In the car was me, mom, dad and my 2 sisters Tiffany and Bethany. Tiffany and Bethany were much older than me. Tiffany was 10 at the time and Beth was 15. We were hit head-on by a huge truck. Our car collided and it was over. Our parents didn't make it but we, the kids, survived. Our grandparents from mom's side took us in. Dad's parents didn't like us much but that didn't matter to us because we were happy with mom's parents. When I turned 15, my grandfather died. It hurt grandmama so bad she started falling sick. She was never in the same good old health she always was in. Tiffany had turned 20, she had no money for college so she married off. Bethany was smart enough to get a study assistance so at 25 she had already graduated and later got married with her first child at 27. I stayed behind to take care of grandma. Today I'm 25, I work on the farm as a domestic worker- I don't make much but the Lord sees me through.

So now it's just me and grandmama.
