"Grandmama? I'm home for lunch."
"Gwen,dear don't worry I managed to take a bath."
"Oh no grandmama, I don't want you doing things without me. You can get hurt. Don't ever do that to me,don't ever scare me like that, please."
"I'm sorry my child. Sometimes I feel like I am such a burden to you. You are young, beautiful and clever. Why would you want to take care of an old woman like me when you can go look for work in the city?"
"Don't talk like that grandmama, please. I want to be here. I am happy here. I have you at home, I have Linda at work. I would want nothing more than to be with you guys. I do wish I had a little more money to fix my little house but as long as I am spending it to keep you healthy and happy then nothing bothers me." I sobbed.

I stood at the kitchen counter preparing the mashed potatoes. Grandmama was sitting in the kitchen listening to her daytime story on the radio. It was a love story.

"Grandmama? Do you ever miss Poppa?"
"Gwendolyn...I miss him everyday." She looked down.
"I'm sorry grandmama."
"No,don't be. I miss him but I am happy because I spent literally almost the rest of my life with him. " she smiled.
"Really grandmama?"
"Yup. He was the first man I ever truly loved and although it got difficult now and then, he was my man. He loved me through the good and the bad. We weren't perfect but we had each other. And oh boy, after the birth of your mother he became happier. He loved our sons but he had always wanted a daughter. Your mother, Lydia, was his first and only daughter. I never forget the day I was sitting in my big bed, holding little Lydia in my arms. I had just given birth and he was coming in from work. It was the happiest day of our lives." She said, staring at the wall with tears in her eyes.
"Happiness is everything." I walked to her and held her hand.

She still had her wedding ring on.

I made sure grandmother was stuffed full with mash and that she was comfortable for the rest of the day until I returned.

"I will see you later grandmama."
"Goodbye,child."
