Waiting at the bus stop the next day, the van arrived.
"Good morning,beautiful."
"Morning."
"Off to work are we?"
"Mhmm."
"How did you sleep with that pain in your foot."
"I slept."
"I could give you a foot rub if you let me."
"Here comes the bus. Goodbye." I moved to the bus.
"Well goodbye!" He yelled out. When I arrived at work the house was still rather clean. I breathed a sigh of relief because my foot wasn't in the best condition to move around much. Linda walked in with a scarf around her neck.
"Linda!" I exclaimed
"What?"
"Put the scarf away, we don't want to get caught playing around with Mrs. Smith's clothes!"
"Oh I'm glad you think it's fancy enough to be hers."
"Wait , that's yours?"
"Yup. Cool huh?"
"Linda what are you doing wearing a scarf in the middle of summer?" I narrowed my eyes...
"Oh nothing, I just felt like making a fashion statement." She said, looking down.
I could smell a rat. Something wasn't right with Linda.
"Linda...a scarf in summer? My friend...you know I don't buy that."
"Gwen. I'm okay."
I saw tears in her eyes.We were interrupted by a loud bang on the farmhouse door. Mr. Smith is a terrible man, I know, but he would never knock on his own door and not even like that. I went to open the door. There was a tall man with a scar on his face. I knew him. He was Linda's boyfriend. He's a nice guy. As far as I know. I just couldn't figure out why the sudden change in knocking.
"Oh hey, Don." I smiled.
"Sorry for startling you with that knock Gwennie. Is Linda in today?" He asked.
"Oh yes. Let me call her."I went to Linda. "Don's here to see you, doll."
Her eyes widened "He's here to see me?"
"Yeah. Come. I will leave you two alone."She went to Don and I limped to the bedroom.
I was busy dusting the dressing table when I heard voices outside.
"I tried to explain to you but you wouldn't let me."
"Really? You are such a lying bitch."
"Don, please. He was being nice by giving me a ride home. He meant no harm. He has a wife and kids. I was exhausted and couldn't walk any further."
"Listen here you slut. I pay your rent and make sure you are well taken care off and this is the thanks I get?"
"Don,NO!"I heard banging and screams. I ran with my painful foot to the door and Linda wasn't there. When I looked out, there she was, being dragged on the dusty driveway!
"HELP!" I screamed! "Somebody help!!!"
My screaming was futile, the men who worked on the field weren't here.
My foot was in pain but I had to help Linda. This big man was dragging her by the hand right into the middle of the road full of big trucks."Noo! Please Don!!!" Linda pleaded with tears.
There was a massive truck on the way. It was already hooting from a distance. I was panicking. This man was really strong and he had kept Linda down in the middle of the street. It was strategic because he knew she wouldn't be able to get up on time before the truck could hit her. Just as the truck was about to hit Linda, a man out of nowhere ran and pushed Linda out of the road. He got a hold of Don, shoved him to the side of the road and beat him into a pulp until he died.
I ran to Linda and held her in my arms. She was in a state.
"Linda, oh my goodness! It's okay it's okay. Please don't cry. It's okay and he's gone now." I cried with her.The man who hit Don was actually Mr.Smith.
"You sure won't see that sucker again." He said.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Smith." I said.
"She should come in and let Mrs. Smith check her out."
