"Alex. Sit down." George said, he was smiling at the boy he had come to see as a son. Alex plopped onto Martha and George's bed.
"What is it?" Alex asked, he took a bite of his sandwich and then awkwardly brushed the crumbs off the bedsheet. Martha came in to the room and shut the door, sitting next to Alex. He set his head in her lap.
"Hi Alex." She said. He looked up at her."Hi Martha." He grinned. She pet his hair.
"Alex." George took a deep breath. "We'd like to adopt you."The two adults watched the boys face as his smile grew and his eyes lit up. He bolted from his lying position and was on his feet in no time.
"Really?" He shrieked. "That's- that's-" Unable to think of a word that explained how he was feeling, "That's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" He shouted. He threw himself at George's waist, wrapping his arms around his legs and squealing. George bent down and picked him up."Thanks George!" Alex kissed George's cheek.
"Actually, I was thinking you could call me dad. I could call you son, son." George said hopefully.
"But, I'm not your son." Alex didn't stop smiling, but his tone wasn't happy."But son,"
"I'm not your son." Alex's voice was stern. There was no changing the fact that he wasn't George's son. "I don't mind being adopted by you, and I'd love, love, love to live with you and Martha permanently. But I can't, and never will replace my mother and father." Alex said.
George and Martha nodded solemnly. "That's quite alright Alex, because we love having you in our home.""Can I invite Laurens, Mulligan and Laf over for a sleepover?" Alex was positively giddy at the news of beings adopted.
"Of course." Martha stood up and nodded.
"Thanks!" Alex leaned over and hugged her, kissing her cheek. The three smiled like one small, but happy family.
