Alex puffed his pillow and made the sleeping bag a little more comfortable, he wanted his friend to feel as home as possible. He glanced around the room, doing a check list in his mind. Yummy snacks? Check. Good toys? Check. Sleeping arrangements? Check. Drinks? Check. Nightlight for his friend (John didn't like the dark) ? Check. He had everything he needed for the perfect night.
Mr.Washington approached his son. "Alex?" He smiled, his eyes twinkling. He loved how his son wanted his friend to be happy.
"Yes?" Alex was extremely chipper, he was having a sleepover with Laurens tonight, and he couldn't wait. He hadn't seen Laurens since Laurens hadn't been feeling well the past week. But Mr.Washington had invited him over. Something called a Pox party? There were chickens involved or something.
"Laurens had to uh- cancel his plans." Mr.Washington said, he felt so bad for his son.
"Oh?" Unhappiness flickered across Alex's face.
"Laurens moved, his mother got a job in Alaska and they moved. I'm so sorry." Mr.Washington looked at his son, and bent down to pick him up.
"He moved without saying goodbye?" Alex sniffled, he didn't want to cry, but he felt betrayed.
"I-" Mr.Washington melted, he sat next to his son. Alex began to sob, and climbed into Mr.Washington's lap.
"Why?" Alex whimpered, he buried his head into Mr.Washington's stomach.
Mr.Washington pet his hair, his son was in despair and there was nothing he could do about it."I don't know son. I don't know."Alex swallowed, but didn't react to Mr.Washington calling him son. He needed a dad right then, and this was the best one he was going to get. "Thanks..." Alex took a deep breath. "Dad."
Martha watched from the doorframe, when Alex called George dad she couldn't help but smile. She and George had been hoping for this, now they had a kid. She pat her stomach. And one more on the way.
