The Audition Part 4
********
Dei sat, confused at the breakfast table the day after their wedding. She knew their marriage won't be normal but she did not expect her husband to be more odd than what she initially thought. His actions since the ceremony has left her perplexed, one moment he was kissing her passionately then staring at her coldly the next.
When she went back to her room yesterday after a quick toast to celebrate their union, Dei found all her things have been moved to the Master's bedroom.
She hesitated for a moment but given that she doesn't have much choice on the matter, opened the adjacent door and stepped into the other chamber. It was three times bigger than the one she was in before with a huge four poster bed, large wooden closets and drawers, a 3-seater couch and coffee table and a tea table set by one of the windows.
She walked in feeling small in the midst of his grand bedroom looming with his overwhelming masculine power.
Her uncertainty was somehow lessened when she saw the basket of red roses on the bed side table with a hand-written note. She sat on the bed and read it.
Dear Dei,
I hope you find the accommodations in your new bedroom at your convenience. We can discuss future renovations as you wish later.
Your husband,
RichardDei sighed as she stared at the beautiful crimson blossoms and read his note again. Based on the letters she saw in his study, it was written in his own hand which meant the roses and the message were really from him and not some arrangement from Albert to make her feel better. (In the few days that she has spent with them, Dei found that the old steward has developed the habit of giving her small favors whenever his young master did something that upset her.)
And for a moment there, Dei thought that somehow, no matter how miniscule, Richard actually cared about her.
Dei leaned on one arm as she planted a hand on the bed. She drew in a slow deep breath, as she felt the smooth silk sheets on her fingertips and tried to calm the anxiety she felt, knowing that later that evening she will sleep on that same bed with Richard.
But that didn't happen... She didn't see him the entire day after the wedding and he stayed in his study the whole night.
When she woke up that morning there was still no sign of Richard so she got up from bed, walked to the big window and opened it to greet a new day.
"Bonjour, Mama. Bonjour, mes amours Colette et Franco." Dei whispered to the soft breeze that brushed her cheek, wishing that it carries her greeting to the family she missed so much.
Dei closed her eyes as the warm rays of the morning sun touched her olive skin, clad only in her sheer white nightgown and camisole. Her hair formed a brown halo around her lovely face as it shone under the golden light. Dei sighed and smiled as she indulged in the calming radiance of the morning star.
