Wham! Wham! Wham!
I roll over on my stomach, pulling the bed cover over my head and tightly clenching my eyes. Sure, that will stop the tremendously loud noise coming from the depths of Hell only to rudely interrupt my blissfull slumber.
Wham! Wham! Wham!
Seriously! Why on Earth did my annoying neighbours decided that it's totally fine to make renovations in their house? It's Saturday morning, for Christ's sake!
Wham! Wham! Wham!
Oh, no they didn't! My eyes shoot open and I get up from my bed, angrily kicking the bed covers. Putting on a black hoodie over my pajamas, I make my way out of the room and to the stairs.
Wham! Wham! Wham!
"What the...?" I freeze as I go down the staircase, one leg on the ground and the other one hanging freely in the air. My eyes go bigger and bigger and I just stand there waiting patiently for the moment when they will pop out of my head, roll down the rest of the stairs, go through the front door and make a quick trip around the planet before returning in their previous places. The moment comes and passes me like an express train. But then the realization comes. Apparently the noise isn't coming from the neighbours' house, but from the first floor of my own house. Nah! This can't be true! Or maybe I'm dreaming? I slowly lift my left hand and pinch my cheek. If it's hurting it's not a dream, right!?
Wham! Wham! Wham!
As I decide to continue my quest quietly down the stairs, the noise gets even louder, making me even more curious. But I wasn't prepared for the picture waiting me on the first floor. Oh, no, no, no! It caught me absolutely unprepared! There is a tall man with dark short hair, maybe in the middle of his 40-s, in a black overall with a hammer in his hand. And guess what the most weird part is? He is fixing the broken windows! I know, right!
"Ummm... H... hello?" I stutter and he turns around.
Ok, perhaps greeting politely a complete stranger when you are all alone in the house isn't the best idea. He might be a serial killer or a kidnapper. Well, too late! He smiles, making a few steps towards me and I can't help myself but to smile back. What? I'm a nice person after all. And if I have to be honest, if he wanted to kill me, he wouldn't take the time to fix the windows first, right?! Right! As he comes closer, I realize that he looks very, very familiar.
"You must be Liza!" He reaches his hand and I take it, shaking it lightly still not understanding what exactly is going on. "I've heard so much about you that I think I know you pretty well, despite the fact we haven't even met! I'm..."
"Dad?" David appears from the kitchen with a stained apron, covering his bare chest. I'm still not used to this mouth-watering view, so I just bite the inside of my cheek, trying not to jump on him and suffocate him with kisses. "Hi, princess!" He smiles and kisses my lips, causing a huge amount of embarrassment to flood my cheeks.
"You must be hungry." He says when we pull away from each other and takes my hand. For a brief second I see a mischievous spark in his eyes as he emphasizes on the last word, but it vanishes quickly. "Let's eat then. I just finished preparing the lunch and..."
"Actually, Davey, I'll go if that's ok with you. Your mom is probably waiting for me." His dad says, scratching the back of his neck and looking everywhere exept in his son's face. He must be feeling uncomfortable after David and I kissed and is trying to avoid more awkward moments by leaving. Can't blame him! David's grip tightens around my hand, causing me to let out a little squeak. He immediately lets go of my hand, glancing at me with "I'm-so-sorry!" face and I smile a little in response. Yeah, it's definitely not the kiss!
"As you wish, dad, but I'm staying with Liza." David gently takes my hand again. If his dad was feeling uncomfortable a moment ago, then right now the feeling is mutual. I don't like these kinds of conversations where one person is trying to make an effort, but the other person is too stubborn and afraid to seize the chance. And most of all I hate when I'm witnessing such an intimate conversation. I know David and his parents are going trough a rough time, but it doesn't mean that he must run and hide from the problem.
"Ok. I guess I'll see you tonight. Do you want to watch the game?" His dad says, eyes filled with hope, but I already know that David isn't going to give up that easy. Like I said, stubborn and afraid.
"No, I'm staying with Liza untill her parents come back. She can't be all by herself in this house." This time it's my turn to squeeze his hand, but he ignores me. "Look what happened on the first night. What if I wasn't here?" He points to the windows and lets out a long sigh. "Thank you for fixing the windows, dad, but you have to understand me. I can't leave her alone."
"I understand, Davey." Although he is smiling, I can see disappointment and pain in his eyes. "It was a pleasure to meet you Liza!" He turns his gaze to me and I immediately smile.
"Oh, no, sir, the pleasure was all mine. And again, thank you for the windows!"
====================
As I slowly open my eyes, a lonely ray of yellow light catches my sight. It's lazily seeping between the two purple curtains in my room, making its way from the window to the door. It comes from the streetlamps outside, so I assume it's late in the evening. David and I have been laying on my bed since lunch, just cuddling and blissfully enjoying each others presence. We have been talking for hours, but a couple of times I had fallen asleep while he was slightly caressing my hair. After his father left the rest of the day was actually very peaceful and quiet, but somehow I can still sense a sertain amount of tention in the air. Ever since he told me about his parents' divorce a couple of weeks ago, we haven't even mention this topic. I decided not to pressure him and to give him time to think. David deeply inhales, making my head rise along with his chest.
"You know, they have been married for almost 20 years. This is longer than I have lived. They completed each other in every way possible. And now..." He lets a loud sigh. "I just don't understand how..." His voice trembles and I wrap my hands around his torso, trying to comfort him. His heart starts beating faster and he remains silent for a couple of minutes, probably waiting for his heartbeat to calm down. "I always thought that they will love each other and be together until the end of the world. But life can always surprise and disappoint you, right?!" He sighs once again.
"David, what happened?" I say quietly, lifting my head so I can look at him. There are so much pain and anger at the same tim.
"She cheated on my father." He stands up from the bed and starts pacing back and forth around the room, which is kind of making me a little dizzy. "Do you know what the sickest part is?! My dad forgave her! He forgave her, Liza! Just like that."He makes a quick motion with his hand like he's trying to get rid of some annoying bug, flying around him. "Perhaps he is scared of ending alone after all these years thay have spend together, but that doesn't mean he'll actually be alone. He have me. I will be there for him in every way possible." He sits on my bed, lowering his head like he is ashamed of something. "And now they're pretending it never happened! But it did and she have to face the consequences."
"But didn't you said they're getting a divorce?"
"Yeah, that was before, but now my father is hesitating."He glances at me. "I know that I didn't asked you earlier, but can I stay with you, princess? I can't go back there. I don't want to see her right now." The sorrow in his voice is making me realize that the only thing I can do for him right now is to support him. I sit up, taking his hand into mine.
"Then I guess I have a new roommate." The edges of his lips curl a little as he leans to kiss my forehead.
