October 5th, 2015 / Monday

An annoying beeping sound fills up the room, making my eyes open widely in horror and almost sending my behind straight on the floor.

What's going on? Is it time for the Purge?

I sit up in the bed, rubbing my eyes and switch off the alarm on my phone. I hate waking up early! If I had a choice my day was going to start around lunchtime.

I force my still sleepy body to stand up and head to the bathroom. As I finish brushing my teeth, almost falling asleep in the sink a couple of times, a strange thought creeps it's way on the surface of my mind.

Today is the first day of school !!!

The shock hits me after a brief second, causing a rapid breathing, racing heartbeat and toothpaste all over the mirror.

Ok, Liza, calm down! Just calm down!!!  You have to breathe in and slowly breathe out! Again! Everything is going to be fine! It's just school, not the end of the world.

I quickly wash my face and go back into my room. After two fast moves my pajamas are thrown somewhere on the floor, my hands already reachnig out to the outfit I thoughtfully chose last night – high-waisted jeans, white T-shirt and my favourite white converse shoes. I put on some mascara and grab my purple backpack off the floor as I hurriedly leave the room. I make my way downstairs to the kitchen to find a plate full of pancakes and a note next to it on the table.

"Good morning, sweetie. The convention is going to last for at least 2 weeks, but if you need us we can come home at any time. Make sure you call us every day.

Love, Mom & Dad."

My parents have a real estate agency and they work even when they are at home. Almost every month they go on a convention or a seminar in a different city, so I'm already used to be all alone at home.

I don't really mind it though. Yes, sometimes it can get a little lonely, but I have my YouTube channel, my books and, last but not least, my best friend. When I was little I had babysitters, but now when I'm practically an adult, they trust me enough to leave me home by myself. Besides, if I ever get bored or scared I can always go to Gabbie's. She is like the sister I always wanted to have.

I quickly shove a pancake in my mouth, lock the front door and get into my car. During the summer vacation I got my license, so my parents decided to make me an early Christmas present and bought me a car.

It's not brand new, but I love it just the way it is. As I start the engine, I turn the radio on and the volume up. Loud music always find a way to sooth my anxiety. I take a deep breath and drive off to school.

Another miserable year, entirely full of studying is waiting for me. Hooray!

When I park my car in front of the building, I see Gabbie walking towards me. I sigh and get out.

"Hey, Liza! Are you excited? It's our senior year, isn't that crazy?!" She chirps, giving me a big smile before pulling me into a hug.

"Ummm, yeah! Sure. I think you can put it that way." I force a fake smile on my face, but she senses my pathethic attempt right away and gives me a pointy look.

Sometimes I have this weird feeling that she can read my mind just with one quick glance at my face. It's quite scary if you ask me.

"Liza! As I said, it's our last year!" She repeats when we start walking towards the school. "You have to finally get over your shyness and try to be a little bit more open-minded. You know you are allowed to have some fun, right?! So please, please, please promise me that you won't make this year as boring as the last one. And the year before. And the..."
