Chapter 21

Everyone was silent.

"D-dad?" I stuttered, shocked.

He walked to the side of my bed.

"Hey Mares. How you feeling hon?" He asked.

I stared at him, not answering.

"Dad what are you doing here?" I asked.

"Mary!" My mother scolded.

My dad turned around and saw my mother.

"Hello Jules." He said quietly.

She nodded.

"Hello Roger. How you been?" She asked quietly.

He nodded.

"Busy." He stated and focused back on me.

"Mary when can you leave?" He asked.

I looked at Gabriel behind me and then back at my father.

"Today or tomorrow." He nodded.

"Good because you're coming home." He said.

I gasped and shook my head.

"No! I don't want to go home!" I yelled.

He stared at me.

"What happened to you not wanting to come here?" He asked.

I looked at the floor.

"I changed my mind. Please dad. My friends are here and I made new friends and Gabriel's-"

"Yes who is this Gabriel I keep hearing about? The one who got my daughter stuck in here." He asked.

Gabriel lifted me up carefully and stood up, putting me back on the bed. He stood up straight and faced my father.

"Gabriel Thomas sir." He said in his southern accent, putting out his hand.

My father looked at it for a moment and then shook it.

"Hello. May I ask how you know my daughter?" He asked.

"Dad!" I yelled.

He ignored me and Gabriel said,

"I met her on the farm sir. I'm a ranch hand and so are Grayson and William."

He gestured to Gray and Will. They both stood up and shook my father's hand.

"So you got my daughter hurt huh?" He stated.

I shook my head and opened my mouth but Gabriel nodded.

"Yes sir. I tried to protect her but I was too late." He said quietly.

My father's eyes flashed with anger and I shook my head.

"No, that's not true!" I yelled.

"Hush." My father said.

I stared at him.

"Gabriel. You are no longer allowed to talk or be near my daughter." He said.

I stared at him.

"Dad please. Don't. It's not his fault!" I yelled.

"Mary this boy is no good for you." He growled, looking at me now.

I opened my mouth to say something but he put his hand up, stopping me.
