mess hall
rejection clung to you like a wet coat, gagging as you wove through the rest of your classes like a ghost, the hours blending into one long, grey blur. your thoughts, despite your best efforts to avoid them, circled back to that exchange, gnawing at the fringes of your sanity.
when lunchtime finally rolled around, you rushed to the cafeteria with only one desire: the comfort of your friends. petra, historia and mikasa were already at your usual table, mid-conversation.
their chatter stopped when you slid into your seat, eyes tracking your every move, expectant, like they were waiting for you to crack.
"you just let him go?" mikasa pressed, deftly unwrapping her custard dorayaki.
you shrugged, staring blankly at the untouched tray in front of you, your appetite long gone."what else was i supposed to do?"
the words felt stale in your mouth. you let your forehead drop to the cool surface of the table, a weak attempt at hiding from their probes.
petra nudged one of her signature fruit-filled sandwiches your way, bright colours tempting, but you waved it off.
"i couldn't just keep begging."
"so what are you going to do? you can't tell everyone that you lied. especially not after what happened during homeroom."
"i know," you uttered, feeling your friend's words pressing down on you.
"he's really heartless. i mean, he rejected you even after he overheard what jean said about you?"
you groaned into your arm, fingers gripping at your champagne-blonde hair as if you could pull the emotions out of yourself. the humiliation, the confusion. it was all too much.
"can you blame him, though? he barely knows me."
"maybe you should try speaking to him again," historia recommended, dabbing at her mouth with a napkin after finishing her takoyaki octopus balls."sit him down and explain the pros and cons of the situation. maybe he felt like it was too awkward."
