Chapter 39:

Lee's POV (Continued)

The pros and cons of each option weigh heavily in my mind, in the end the scales tip towards staying, as we anonymously decide that it's smarter to stay put and wait for the approaching vehicle find us. After all, if it came down to the wire, there is absolutely no way we'd be able to outrun Denyt's men anyway. Because not only are we all tired, half starved, weak and vulnerable; But we're now also pulling Remi along on a stretcher behind us and that won't make things any easier.

Hearts pounding with a nervous anticipation in our chests, we stand awkwardly at the edge of the road waiting for whatever happens next. It sounds like the vehicle is almost upon us before it rounds the corner, the occupants inside see us, screech to a halt, its tires squealing leaving black marks on the road with a smell of burnt rubber in the air and the engine spluttering away.

The moment it stops, a door is roughly shoved open from the inside and an almost disproportionally tall, burly man steps out of the truck.  Instantly my gut says that we should have run while we had the chance, but now it's all too late, the decision has been made.

"Who are you and how did you get here! This is a private road with no access!" He shouts at us angrily. But when no one replies to answer his questions because we're all just gaping at him in utter shock, he narrows his eyes at us looking more surly by the second.

"Well if that's the way you want to do things." He then reaches behind him, back into the truck and pulls out some type of deadly looking gun, clicking off the safety with one hand before pointing it directly at us. Then even more frighteningly, with a nod to some else in the truck, we all hear the distinctive click of a shotgun being loaded on the other side. Smiling grimly he asks, "Now I asked you lot some questions and I'd appreciate it if you answered. Otherwise things might start to get ugly..."

Stepping forward carefully, I am immediately aware that both rifles are now pointed solely at me. Swallowing hard, I slowly raise my hands in surrender. "We mean no harm sir, we've been trying to find our way home after getting into some trouble on our summer camp. We don't even know where we are."

All of a sudden, a strange yet knowing look passes over his face and he lowers his rifle with a nod, "Well it seems like you'd better come with us then."

Even though I don't know how much we can trust these guys, turning around to look at the others I shrug wearily, "It's not really like we have much of a choice in the matter right?" So after climbing into the back of the vehicle, the doors are slammed shut behind us and then after feeling the truck turn back around in the direction that it came, we thunder off down the road.

End of Lee's P.O.V

Jase's P.O.V

Denyt's voice filters in and out of my hearing but somehow I still get the gist of what's going on. He seems to have decided that we are ready for what ever it is that he has planned, so as our final test, we are to break into a bank on the far side of town. Now one important detail that sticks with me is that if we get caught, it's on us whatever happens legally and if we do somehow make it out without prison time, Denyt's men will be right there to kick our asses for us.

Or at least something along the lines of that.

I don't think I really want to know the specifics, as I'd prefer to just imagine it to be all smooth sailing.

However it troubles me greatly that the mission itself is so problematic from start to finish, beginning with the very first detail. Because after receiving the information packs from one of his men, we quickly see that Denyt kindly forgot to mention one very tiny little detail in his 'rousing' speech. That 'little' detail is that this isn't just any small bank that can easily be overthrown with the right amount of guns and manpower. No. Because that would be too easy right? The bank that we are supposed to be robbing, happens to belong to one of the most corrupt men in Rio, at least that's what I've been able to gather from what's been drilled into me in my extensive tech classes over the past few weeks.
