Lee's P.O.V (Continued)
Unlike my the screens showing the busy and bustling people going about their business, it had at first seemed as though Jack had drawn the short straw with the footage he had been tasked to watch.
With not a soul in sight, there seemed to be only the ever present darkness of the very dimly lit tunnel system under Rio itself.
My food lying forgotten on the table, Eli seems to be the only one who is still capable of functioning properly as he tasks himself with locating the exact location of the camera. While he's doing that, Noah however leans over with a triumphant grin, laying his tablet out on the desk for everyone to see and instantly we all crowd inwards to get a better glimpse. With the tablet almost right under my nose, on its display I can see a series of lines, each intersecting at certain point and one red glowing point that blinks ominously in the center of the screen.
I'm about to open my mouth to ask what exactly it is that we're looking at, when Noah begins to speak, "So the team back home just sent this through, and it's a map of all the 'known' tunnels that are spread under the area of the city of Rio. The blinking dot that you can see here," He points at the little spot that all of our eyes are fixated upon as it jumps it way down a line, "Is actually a sensor warning that I've coded to alert us every time any of the cameras detect a hint of movement that is more than you know, a rat or something along those lines. Now in comparison, we are over here..." As he's talking, he zooms the map out the slightest bit to show us where our current base is.
This information leaves everyone in a stunned silence as we digest the news, because if what Noah is saying is correct, then there are only a few hundred meters separating us from the continuously moving dot that is slowly drawing closer and closer to where we are.
"So... What are the chances that Pike knows we're here?" I ask quietly, not sure if I should even voice the question or not.
I jump slightly when Wyatt's hand rests on my shoulder as he bends forward as if needing to check again that what he is seeing is correct. "I don't know. While it does seem like the most likely reason that there would be someone wandering around in the tunnels, I find the pattern of movement rather strange."
"Strange sir?" Questions Noah, tilting his head and looking back over his shoulder to glance up at Wyatt.
"Yes, strange." Wyatt nods thoughtfully, sticking to his choice of word, "Look at how slowly and unevenly the dot is travelling. Something is off but I just can't place my finger on what it is."
"Sir?" A voice comes from somewhere at the back of the group, "I'll take a couple of the boys and go find out what or who it is. Since we're otherwise so isolated down here in the tunnels we can contain the situation before anything can potentially escalate."
I watch as Wyatt ponders over this tactic, "Very well Ev, that sounds like the best possible plan of action right now. Take as much back up as you think you'll need and go get ready, I want this taken care of within the next two hours."
At his words, it's like everyone knows they have been dismissed and it's time to get back to work as they all disperse and head off towards their respective stations. Ev however stops Asher, Connor, Levi and two others by pulling them aside, an unspoken discussion passing through their eyes before they all turn in sync towards the designated weaponry station.
While I know that I will probably hinder more than help, I can't help the words that slip out of my mouth, "Ev? Can I tag along?"
My question halts Ev in his steps and I see his back tense before he slowly turns back to face me. Not surprisingly, his face is all scrunched up in a manner that suggests that he is not particularly keen on fulfilling my wish, and I am sure that the words about to leave his mouth will reflect that. However before he can crush my hopes, Connor gives him a sharp nudge in the ribs with his elbow, whispers something in his ear and then turns to me with a sly wink.
