A/N: This was supposed to be a sadness-free chapter, but my emo side took over😐
We woke up at 2pm, given our falling back asleep practically in the morning. We didn't have much time before he had to leave for the airport, so we only managed to drink some coffee and pack the rest of his stuff for the trip.
I hated that he had to leave. I hated it when we were away from each other, even for a short period of time. Saying goodbye was extremely hard back when we were still nothing but friends. I could only imagine how hard it would be now that we are way more than that.
Him leaving for New York was a terrible reminder of what was due to happen soon. We would have to say goodbye. There was no escaping it. The shooting for this season was nearly finished, so we only had a couple weeks or so left of being together. Then I would go to Los Angeles and he would go back to Ireland to visit his family.
His cab was supposed to arrive at any moment. I set our coffee mugs in the kitchen sink. I walked to the living room where he was sitting on the couch and double-checked if he had packed everything he would need. When he noticed my presence, he stood up, came to me and took my hand. We both walked towards the front door.
It was time to say goodbye. For just a day, but still, I hated it. I looked down at our hands. Our fingers interlocked perfectly.
And then I noticed.
I freed myself from his hold and rushed to the guest room. I rummaged through the drawers of the nightstand, searching for the one thing he had forgotten but he actually needed the most.
When I found what I was looking for, I took another second to look at it closely.
It was another reminder of what I could never truly have.
I closed my fingers around it and exited the room. When I went back to him, the confusion was evident on his whole face.
I smiled a fake smile at him and took his hands in mine.
"You forgot this." I said as I was opening my palm to hand it to him.
He looked down at his hand and when he realized what it was that he was now holding, his face expression changed completely. He started to look all tensed up and slightly guilty.
"Jen, I don't want to wear this anymore." he said, shaking his head briefly.
He indeed felt guilty. He knew this hurt me, regardless of how desperately I was trying to hide it. I knew he was hurting as much as I was. On that rooftop in Atlanta he had promised me we would start things right this time, but there were still so many obstacles on our way. Secrecy, constantly lurking paparazzi, our families living in different parts of the world, just to name a few.
And then this. This little round gold trinket that made everything far more complicated. A constant reminder of how awful a person I was to steal some other woman's man.
Their wedding ring.
The ring with HER name engraved on the inside, along with a date. A date that was supposed to be the start of THEIR lives together.
I took a deep breath.
"I know. But you have to. It's ok." I assured him.
He closed his palm and shoved the thing in his pocket. He then grabbed my face and kissed me slowly.
This simple kiss meant the world to me. It was yet another promise. A silent one. A promise that it was indeed going to be ok. A promise that he would come back to ME. A promise that he loved ME.
