lugas casino

picking up your father after dark from the casino was one of your worst nightmares.

the idea of being around those men, the drools, the leers—it made your skin crawl. you weren't the type to be easily rattled, but walking into that basement dive where shadows seemed to have teeth, you felt your confidence fraying like a rope about to break.

your heart palpitated as you reached the door, the warped wood sticky under your palm. you exhaled, steeling yourself through the stench of stale beer and sweat.

get in, get him, and get out. don't give them the time of day. that was your thought process every time.

tonight, though, something was off. the usual cluster of drunkards loitered at their posts—slumped in cracked leather chairs, grumbling over card games—but your father wasn't among them. the stained couch where he usually waited for you was empty.

a cold weight settled in your gut. where the hell was he?

you scanned the room, your every nerve on high alert. it was then that you felt it—a pair of eyes lacerating you.

one of the men at the pool table had paused his game. he leaned lazily on his cue, scoping you over like you were some kind of prize.

your insides stirred, but you forced yourself to look away. don't engage. don't make eye contact.

"hello there," the man welcomed, his voice slurred, dripping with sleaze."are you looking for someone? or maybe...you're looking for some fun?"

"no, thank you," you declined, keeping your manner respectful, even though you wanted to tell him to go fuck himself. you tried to put distance between you, but he wasn't taking the hint.

"i was just about to leave..."

"oh, come on. don't be like that, sweetheart. i'm just being friendly." his grin widened, revealing yellowed teeth.
