Carnal Seduction

Chapter Twenty Four

I sat at my desk, staring at the computer screen, not at all focusing on the work that was before me, but on Nevaeh. It was hell being where I was, not knowing if she was safe. I had called her now three times and each time she had answered and I had sighed with great relief when I heard her voice and found her safe. She had told me to stop panicking, and that what ever was making me do so, she was going to make sure I would talk to her about it when I arrived home.

In honest truth I didn't want to frighten her more than I had this morning when I had left. But keeping her in the dark would only cause her to become frustrated at me, and I did not want to be the reason as to why things might turn sour between us, even if the presence of her lurking ex boyfriend would be the real reason for my actions. I couldn't concentrate on the workload I had to finish before the days end at all, and the deadline was drawing so very close.

I simply wanted the day to end. I wanted to be home, holding Nevaeh safely in my arms. When my thoughts turned dark, and my mind raced with images of her ex getting a hold of her, and what I imagined he would do to her, my fear became so real that I had to stop myself from picking up the phone and calling her again to be sure no harm had come to her.

My thoughts became so bad that I knew, if he were to somehow have her alone, and even so much as lay a finger on her, I wouldn't stop with my murderous intent against taking his life. I vowed that I would kill him if he so much as came within a meter of her.

" Cael, where's the report, Hutchin has been on my case for the last two hours now. Is is done?" I ran my hand through my hair, and my left hand across my face in my growing exhaustion due to my fears and emotions as my work colleague stood at the side on my desk staring me down.

" It will be ready soon, I swear I just need another half an hour Ben." I told him, forcing myself to make eye contact with him. He clenched his teeth, clearly seething from my response, and placed his hands on the desk and leaned closer to me.

" Look if you don't finish that report now, both you and I are going to be raked over the coals, and I'm not taking a fall for you. Whatever is plaguing you, forget it and start focusing on your work." He snarled at me, and I sighed deeply. If only he knew what was plaguing me, yet how could I tell him that it was possible while I sat there doing pointless, unimportant work, my girlfriend's life could be in danger.

" Yeah sure thing." I told him vacantly, and turned my eyes back to the screen.

" Just get it done." He growled, and stalked away his mood now foul because of my inability to work.

After the half an hour, with the time frame I had given to Ben, I finished the report, and slowly I walked towards the board room bracing myself for the onslaught of verbal crap I knew would come my way. I knocked on the door and entered after being told to do so, and instantly was hit with what I had expected.

" Ah ha, finally you finished, If we had to wait any longer we would be six foot in the grave, everyone applaud Cael for accomplishing such a difficult task." A series of hands clapping sounded, and I groaned as I stepped forward into the room and placed the report on the oval table. I simply ignored the sneering looks from my other work colleagues, and turned to leave the room. but stopped when I heard Hutchin call out to me.

" Cael, I will need the Highelden report tomorrow by noon and no later, this is a warning right here, right now. If I have to wait a single second longer, believe me you will regret it. I don't want another day like today with you tomorrow. Are we clear?" I simply nodded my head and turned to leave, now knowing that I would have to work even harder this afternoon to meet the deadline for this next report.

With that in mind as I made my way back down to my desk, as well as Nevaeh's safety in the back of my mind, I became the robot I had once been before Nevaeh had entered my life when it came to my workload and focused on what I knew I need to.
