*Brendon's Point of View*
"Brendon," I opened my eyes to see my mom standing over me, rubbing my back to wake me. I looked around, everything a blurry haze of color and squinted to figure out where I was.
"Here," she handed me my glasses and I put them on, everything instantly becoming more clear and I cringed at my sore back and stiff neck from falling asleep against Charlie's hospital bed. Unfortunately, it hadn't all been some sort of fucked up dream and I was now back to reality.
"You need to eat something, sweetie," she said gently, handing me a plate that had a breakfast sandwich on it and a cup of coffee. I took it from her and hesitantly took a small bite of the sandwich, knowing that she was right, but afraid that if I ate anything that I would throw it all back up. "Jason and David are in with Jane right now. She's awake and doing well, but they found out that she was intoxicated while she was driving Charlie home last night."
A male nurse entered the room, smiling sympathetically at us. "Hello, my name is Brent, I'm here to check on Charlotte, see how she's doing."
I stood from the chair I was sitting in to allow him to come next to Charlie's bed and instead sat in the window seat. "Has she showed any good signs of waking up?"
Brent continued checking her vitals as he answered me. "Well, she hasn't been vocal at all, but when I did ask her to wiggle her fingers for me, she did. It is a good sign, but I don't want to give you false hope because there is still a good chance that she won't wake up."
"Charlie isn't just my girlfriend," I said. "She's the first real relationship I've ever had, and she's my best friend. I can't lose her."
Brent looked at us sympathetically as my mom pulled me into her arms for a hug, rubbing my back again.
"We just have to keep praying, Brendon," she said. Brent left the room to give us some privacy as my mom pulled away and rubbed my back, beginning to say a prayer for Charlie.

*Charlie's Point of View*
Sarah was sitting in front of me, and we had been sitting in silence for a while as she was making a flower crown using the white flowers she was picking around me.
"Why didn't you try to warn me when my mother was drunk last night?" I asked, not recalling ever thinking, this is a bad idea, as I got into the car.
"I did," she replied. "When you thought there was something odd about the way your mother slammed on the breaks a little hard when she got you. My warnings aren't always directly outright saying 'don't do this,' Charlie."
"God, I wish my mother would have just let me drive," I said. "I would be perfectly fine right now, and so would she."
"That would be too easy," Sarah replied. "Then she wouldn't realize that she has a problem, and get the proper help that she needs for it."
"She's awake right now, isn't she?" I asked. "She didn't get the worst of it, I did. I was on the side that got hit, not her."
"Everything happens for a reason, Charlie," Sarah said, reaching out and placing her hand on my knee. "Just remember that."
"Talking to you is so refreshing," I said. "It's like having a mom that can actually talk to me about my problems, unlike my actual mom. Sometimes I feel like Brendon is the only real guidance I have in my life, which is sad and probably unhealthy."
"Brendon is good to you," Sarah said. "Where would you be without him? Even if your guidance comes from your boyfriend and not your parents, it's still guidance regardless. And he loves you, Charlie. You know he does."
