Getting away from all of my family's bullshit was the best part of going out with Brendon, was my initial thought on how the evening was going to go for us. I hardly said much to my mother as I left to meet Brendon outside my house, standing on the front porch with his car in the driveway waiting for us. I grabbed his hand and pulled him along with me, before he had a chance to go inside and start talking to any of my family members.
"So where are we going first?" I asked, offering him a smile as I pulled away to walk to the passenger side of his car.
"Well, we could go out for dinner first?" he offered, smiling back at me and opening his door.
I stepped into his car and settled down into the passenger seat, him sitting in the driver's seat. I leaned across the console and kissed him softly on the lips, pulling away to smile softly at him. "That sounds great. I'm starving."
"Okay," he laughed a bit, pulling his seatbelt on and backing out of the driveway. "Not that I'm complaining, but you seem to be in a pretty good mood right now."
"I'm getting away from my shitty family for an evening, that's always going to put me in a good mood. I thought you'd have this figured out by now," I teased, reaching over and putting my hand on his thigh. The smile hadn't left his face.
"I guess I'm just a dipshit," he shrugged.
We ended up in our usual place, the burger place we always went to and managed to get in right before they were kicking people out to close. We promised we wouldn't be long and were seated right away. It shocked me to think that no one was going out for dinner on New Year's Eve but it also occurred to me that most people were partying on New Year's Eve, unlike my introverted self.
"Do you think Dallon and Josh are spending the evening together?" I asked as I ate a few of my fries, Brendon taking a rather large bite of his burger just as I asked. I waited a moment for him to chew and swallow before he answered.
"They never really leave each other's side, Charlie. Dallon probably made up some excuse and said he was coming to my house or something. I bet you $20 Dallon's car will be in Josh's driveway when you get home," he said.
"I'm not going to bet because you're probably right," I said, taking a sip of my drink and wiping my mouth. I'd finished most of my burger and was pretty full, and I think Brendon was getting to be the same way.
"Do you want to walk around for a bit?" he asked. "It's a bit cold out but the city is probably going to be really pretty tonight, with all the lights from people partying."
"Yeah," I smiled. Walking around outside in the crisp air actually sounded really nice. After we paid and left the restaurant, Brendon parked his car downtown and we got out, bundled in our jackets, gloves, scarves and hats and started walking around, arms linked together and laughing at the already drunk party goers that were either stumbling down the sidewalk, being ridiculously friendly or the occasional wasted white girl vomiting into a garbage can just outside of a party while one of her friends held her hair back for her. I counted my blessings that wasn't me tonight.
We found ourselves at a small cafe that was somehow still open and got hot chocolate, sitting inside to warm up from the cold. Brendon was in a goofy mood, making me laugh like old times hanging out together. I couldn't get the smile off of my face as I realized just how in love I am with him for what felt like the millionth time ever.
"I don't get tired of you," I said, our laughter dying down and our hands holding each others across the table, somehow ending up in that position throughout all of our playful banter.
"I'd certainly hope not," he smiled, a small blush creeping into his cheeks.
"I just mean that I feel like everything is always fun with you. Even if it's just sitting in some random cafe drinking hot chocolate and giggling instead of being at some lame ass party. Being with you is way better because you get me, and it's always been like that it seems," I said.
