The practice sessions were vigorously in progress. The ruthless Jean was back in form and Jane cordinated with me just like the old times. With a little push, or maybe a shove, those girls could do wonders, that I was sure of. But exactly how much shoving did they need?
A week passed by in a blur and I could see the seriousness in the team. They were working even when the guys were in the court and were trying to distract them. After an internal match between the girls for the day, they took a break.
"That was good, girls! Keep it up! We can work harder than that! Now take a break. We will start in 10," I said and they dispersed.
The cheer team barged into the court will high pitched squeals and giggles that I cringed. The guys were wolf whistling and shouting and the whole point of seriousness was crumbling.
"Jane!" Kate squealed and hugged her tight. "I missed you so much! You never seem to talk to me anymore! You are always with this loser bunch these days!" I could see her glare at me.
"We have work, Kate," Jane said a little annoyed as she pulled back from her choking grip.
"So much that you ignore your own cousin?" she countered.
"Not like that," she sighed and she looked at me. Realising that I was staring, I looked away as soon as she caught me looking.
"Scarlett!" Ian sat beside me.
"Hmm?"
"Talk to Jane. You can become friends again," he suggested.
"Look who's suggesting," I raised an eyebrow at him.
"I know that I was the reason that this whole breaking up had happened. But things need to be fixed. And it is never too late!"
"Then be Jane's boyfriend once more," I said with utmost seriousness.
He stared at my face for a moment. "That is different, Scarlett!"
"All is the same, Ian. It just depends upon how you perceive it," I got up and dunked in some water from my bottle.
"Will you get back with her if I start going out with her?" he asked me, his face a mask of poker.
"Will you actually go out with her?" I asked him instead.
"Answer me first."
"You do."
"There is a possibility," he looked away and a pang of pain hit my heart. Why was I feeling this way? They are meant to be together!
"Then I will be happy for you," I answered in a mutter after a moment and turned away. There was an unbearable burning sensation in my throat. The lump was stuck and refused to back down.
"That still doesn't answer my question, Scarlett," he put his hand on my shoulder and I shrugged it off. "Scarlett?" he frowned at my distant nature.
"Do it and show me first," I croaked and walked away from him, straight into the washroom.
I did want to get back with Jane. After all, she was my best friend once. I liked seeing Ian and Jane together. They were so happy and were such a cheerful couple. They were both my best friends who were in love. If it wasn't for that night of truth and dare, we wouldn't have been thrown off like this at this moment.
We were middle schoolers back at that time and were invited to a senior's party. Pumped up that we were popular and were invited, we got drunk. Well, we were sober enough that we could understand what was going around us, but yet, tipsy.
We heard rumours about Ian two timing with Jane and me. We laughed it off, of course, but that kind of made Jane insecure. Her feelings were understandable as Ian was the kind of guy who was wanted by everyone. Even the seniors. And us beings best friends and really very close didn't help her insecurity at all. I saw Ian getting brainwashed by all those people who asked him to cheat on her and date me instead. I was sure that he wouldn't, so I never really bothered to stop them. On the other hand, what I didn't know was Jane being brainwashed. She was a little too sensitive and almost believed that he was really cheating on her. Seeing this, I went to Ian to call him and get out of this party along with Jane, but then, I heard him say something.
