Part 9
Snape opened the door of his office and glared down his greasy nose at the trio. He stepped out into the corridor and slammed the door shut behind him. Locking it with his wand, he swept off down the corridor as the three of them hurried to keep up.
"In." He pointed to the open door of his classroom. He followed in after them, shutting the door behind them. There were cauldrons lined along the back of the classroom. "As you can see, there are some cauldrons that need cleaning." Ron gulped. "And over there," he pointed towards the blackboard, which had a smelly green potion spattered all over Snape's small, girly handwriting. "Is the result of some incompetent 1st years." He paused as he smirked down at them, judging their reactions. Harry met Snape's glare with ease, Hermione locked eyes with him for a split second before looking away and Ron was too busy staring in horror at one of the cauldrons, which was the source of a strange squelching sound. "I expect everything to be spotless when I return." Ron looked up hopefully. "No magic." He added, before brushing past them on the way to the door. "There should be some cleaning things in the store cupboard." He said, before closing the door with a snap.
"Slimy old-"
"Right, let's get started then." Interrupted Hermione.
Ron frowned but followed her to the store cupboard. "Is this it?" He asked incredulously. Right at the bottom of the cupboard were 3 cloths, an old moth-bitten sponge, a spray bottle and a broken mop. Ron suddenly jumped back. "S-spider." He said, in an answer to Harry's questioning look.
They got to work. Hermione found out (because Ron refused to go near it) that the cauldron that was the source of the squelching noise contained a number of giant slugs.
"No one asked for your opinion. You filthy little mudblood."
"Eat slugs Malfoy!"
The memory replayed in Hermione's head and she smiled sadly.
"We can put a slug in each of the cauldrons and hopefully they will eat off all the dirt. We can scrub the slim off after." Suggested Harry.
"Good idea." Said Hermione.
Ron didn't look too happy but joined the other two as they reached into the cauldron and pulled out the slugs.
"Hermione." Whispered Harry, while Ron was busy trying to force a particularly reluctant slug into a cauldron. Hermione hummed to show she was listening as she took the moth eaten sponge and started to scrub away at some rust. "Have you-" but he was cut of by Ron's shout.
"Can one of you pass me the mop handle? This slug won't budge!"
Harry sighed and went to grab the broken mop and handed it to Ron. "Cheers mate." He said, taking the stick and pushing the slug into the cauldron. "Done."
Hermione grabbed the spray bottle and sprayed it at the blackboard. The green slime dissolved, leaving the clean blackboard behind.
Harry made his way over to Hermione, making sure that Ron wasn't paying attention. "Hey Hermione."
"What's up?" She replied, turning to face him. "Is it something about Ginny?" She asked, her eyes filled with worry.
"No, it's nothing to do with Ginny or me. I was just wondering if you know who sent the gift."
Hermione relaxed. "No, I don't. I would have told you if I knew."
"Also, you haven't eaten those chocolates yet, have you?" He asked, dropping his voice even lower.
Hermione's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "No, why?"
"They may be laced with love potion. Just be careful."
"Thanks-" but her reply was cut short by Ron's sharp shout.
"What are you two whispering about?"
"The mysterious Valentines gift." Shrugged Hermione, her eyes not leaving his face.
Ron's ears went red. "What's everybody's deal with that stupid gift?" He shouted.
"And what's it got to do with you?" Shouted Hermione back. "Who cares if I get sent an early Valentines gift? It just shows that someone is actually interested. You have Lavender and now Harry has Ginny. Am I not allowed to find someone too Ron? Is Won Won not happy that for once someone has noticed that "I'm a girl"?" She cried, using both Ron's pet name and what he said to Hermione when attempting to ask her out to the Yule Ball in the same sentence.
Ron stood, speechless, frozen to the spot.
Fred and George:
"I'm bored now." Said Lee, after beating the twins at 3 rounds of exploding snap.
Fred pulled out what looked like an old piece of flesh-coloured string from his pocket. "Let's see what Snape has got our golden trio doing in detention." He said, waving the extendable ears in front of his twin and Lee and smiling mischievously.
They made their way down to the dungeons, using all their shortcuts and secret passageways to not get caught. "Will they be in Snape's office or the classroom?" Whispered Lee.
"Lets try the classroom." Said George. They crept towards the door and pressed their ears against it. "They're in here." He confirmed, handing out the extendable ears.
"I was just wondering if you knew who sent the gift."
The twins shared a look with Lee. They listened some more.
"Love potion?" Asked Lee incredulously.
"Yeah, remember the time when all the girls tried to sneak Harry some love potion?" Whispered George.
"Shhh!" Hissed Fred.
"What are you two whispering about?"
They leant closer to the door, not wanting to miss anything that happened but jumped back when Hermione started to shout.
"I can hear footsteps." Hissed Lee, shoving the extendable ears into his pocket. They quickly hid around the corner, where they could still hear the argument going on inside the room.
"It's Snape." Whispered Fred, stepping back into the shadows.
Back in the classroom:
Before Ron could reply, the door burst open.
"I hope you're not fighting again." Said Snape.
"No professor." Replied Harry.
"You may leave." He said, glaring at the three of them as they left the classroom.
Ron was the first to leave, not bothering to wait for Harry.
Hermione followed after, her eyes filled with tears.
