Part 5
At lunchtime, Hermione was in the library, adding extra onto her History of Magic essay (not that she hadn't already done extra. This was just extra-extra). On the other hand, Lavender and Ron were spending "quality" time together, but Hermione tried not to think about that (hence the extra-extra essay) Or the fact that her two closest friends were taking a stroll around the Hogwarts grounds, discussing who knows what.
But for the first time in all the years she had been friends with Harry and Ron, she felt lonely. She was still happy for her friends, of course she was, but she had always thought that her and Ron would be together by the time Harry plucked up the courage to ask Ginny out. Everyone knew that the reason their friendship survived was because they were all the awkward 3rd friend. Harry and Ron had been best friends from the moment they had met on the Hogwarts Express. Hermione was Harry's girl best friend and Hermione and Ron, well, they were Hermione and Ron. But after Ron and Hermione drifted apart, it was only a matter of time until they all fell apart because there was no longer the balance they once had. Instead of Harry being the awkward 3rd friend with Hermione and Ron's relationship, he was now the awkward one in the middle of two best friends who refused to talk to each other.
Fred and George, on the other hand, were busy in the Gryffindor common room while everyone else was enjoying the nice weather while it lasted, or else studying in the Library.
"I can't believe all this stuff has already been delivered." Noted Lee, who was sat opposite the twins near the window.
"Of course it has!" Replied Fred, not looking up from tearing off the brown wrapping paper from the nearest parcel.
"Yeah, we are their star customers, after all." Added George.
"I didn't realise there would be so- much." Lee mumbled, reaching forward to open another parcel and discarding the wrapping by scrunching it up into a ball and throwing it into the fire.
"Nice throw." Commented George, as the brown paper slowly burnt, curling up as the flames engulfed it.
Lee nodded in acknowledgement and grabbed the next parcel. "So what are we going to do with it all?" He asked, gesturing to all the parcels scattered around them. "We don't need them until Thursday."
Fred looked up from untying a particularly tight knot of string and looked across at Lee, a sparkle in his eyes. "The Room of Requirement of course!"
Hermione shut her book with a snap. She had been unconsciously reading the same spell over and over again for the past 10 minutes. Collecting all her things together, and slinging her bag over her shoulder, she walked out of the Library. She was going to visit Hagrid before their Care of Magical Creatures lesson that afternoon.
Hermione made her way across the Hogwarts grounds, dodging a group of excited 1st years who were practicing the levitation charm on a feather that they had found. She also made sure to steer clear of the lake where she knew Ginny and Harry would be and she didn't go anywhere near the secluded corner behind a group of thick-growing bushes where couples could normally be found in heated make-out sessions. From a few meters away, she heard one of the small 1st years exclaim: "Stop! You're saying it wrong! It's Win-gar-dium Levi-o-sar!" She remembered saying the exact same thing to Ron in their 1st year and she sped on, trying to stop herself from thinking about a certain redhead.
When she finally reached Hagrid's hut, a strong smell of Hagrid's cooking came to her from an open window. She knocked on the door and listened to the scraping of Fang's claws on the other side of the door. The door opened and there stood Hagrid, wearing oven mittens and a flowery apron.
"Oh, 'ello 'ermione." He said, beaming down at her. "I didn't expect you 'ere at this time, come in." He stepped back as Hermione walked past him and into the house. "Where's 'arry and Ron?" He asked cheerfully. And that's when Hermione broke down.
Fred and George were watching out of the window from Gryffindor tower as Hermione made her way across the grounds towards Hagrid's hut.
"Looks like she's visiting Hagrid." Pointed out Lee.
"Without Harry and Ron." Muttered Fred.
"No, look, Harry is with Ginny over by the lake and down there," George pointed to a secluded corner behind a row of thick bushes, "are Won Won and Lav Lav. It looks like Hermione has been on her own this lunchtime."
"But why didn't she go with Harry and Ginny?" Asked Lee.
"Because she didn't want to intrude." Shrugged Fred.
"Because she feels lonely." Muttered George.
The three looked at each other and then fell into a cold silence.
When the silence was eventually broken by Fred, there was a new determination in his voice. "It looks like we will have to speed up our plan." He said, looking at both George and Lee in turn. His brother nodded, the same set expression on his face.
"Fred, get wrapping." He passed his brother variously coloured and patterned wrapping paper from a bag under the table. "Lee, get writing." He passed Lee some different coloured parchment, a rage of ink bottles and a quill.
Together they got to work, George unboxing, Fred wrapping and Lee writing different notes in different handwriting with different ink.
When the bell went, the threesome had already packed away their stash safely in the room of requirement, with some help from Dobby- who was more than happy to help "Mr and Mr Weasley and Mr Jordan", ready for the plan to be put into action.
