Part 3
Ron wanted- no, had- to talk to Hermione. But there was one small problem: Hermione seemed to be avoiding him. In charms she had sat on the other side of the classroom from him and in the corridor she had even turned the other way when she saw him. Ron wasn't entirely stupid; he had known Hermione for years and she wasn't exactly subtle about the fact that she was staying out of his way. The one time he had actually managed to get within 10 metres of Hermione, Lavender had come along and Hermione had once again distanced herself from him. It was becoming a problem. He knew that he had to do the right thing and end it with Lavender but he didn't know how. It wasn't like he could just go up to her and dump her. He didn't even know what he was going to say to either of them.

The Valentine's gift still lay untouched beneath the covers of Hermione's four-poster bed. It was lunchtime and most of the school were sat in the Great Hall, helping themselves to food that was magically set out for them.
Lavender was quickly shoving food onto her plate whereas Ron was chewing slowly, deep in thought. Harry and Ginny were sat side by side, chatting to Hermione, and Pavarti kept glancing over at Lee Jordan and the twins, who were discussing their last potions lesson.
Hermione kept glancing at Ron and then back to Harry and Ginny, attempting to smile at her two best friends in front of her who were clearly trying to cheer her up. Fred, George and Lee abruptly got up- they had seen enough.
Ron was oblivious to Hermione's gaze on him. Only Harry and Ginny noticed and they slowly gave up on trying to cheer her up; it clearly wasn't working.
Lavender stood up. "I'm going to grab my library book from the dormitory to hand back." She told Ron, who wasn't paying attention. Pavarti didn't say anything as Luna Lovegood came over and sat opposite her. Recently Pavarti had been left out as Lavender spent more time with Ron, who seemed more distant than ever.
Lavender shrugged, oblivious to her best friend feeling upset as her thoughts were elsewhere. She left the great hall quickly, not wanting anyone to follow.
Lavender made her way through the corridors and she barely met anyone along the way because most people were still down in the Great Hall eating and chatting. She made it to the portrait hole and entered into the Gryffindor common room.
Her mission was simple: find the Valentine's gift.
Lavender was many things but she wouldn't call herself nosy. Rather just curious. Curiosity wasn't a bad thing and her intentions were innocent enough. She simply wanted to know who liked Hermione so much to send her gifts even before Valentine's Day.
Once she had reached the dormitory she shut the door behind her. Pausing for a moment to listen incase anyone had followed her, she made her way over to Hermione's part of the room. Everything was kept neat and tidy; her bed was made and her dresser arranged nicely. It wouldn't be hard to find it in the room. Unless of course, Hermione had kept the gift with her- but she would worry about that if it came to it.
She first walked towards the dresser and attempted to open the top draw. It was locked. Lavender moved to open all the other draws. They were all locked. Sighing, Lavender tried the trunk under the bed. This was also locked. It was no use trying and a simple "Alohomora" didn't work. Hermione had clearly used more complex locking charms. Sighing in defeat and wondering where on earth she would have hidden the gift, Lavender sat on the edge of the bed. Almost instantly she jumped back up again. She had sat on a lump. Lavender threw back the duvet and almost squealed out of excitement. There was the Valentine's gift. In her excitement, Lavender didn't notice the footsteps making their way closer to the dormitory. She picked the gift up as the door burst open and Pavarti came crashing in. Lavender spun around, her eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. She attempted to hide the gift behind her back but Pavarti saw and her eyes widened as she realised what she had just walked in on.
"What are you doing here?" Lavender asked innocently.
Pavarti rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. "This is my room too, remember?" She said sarcastically. "What are you doing with Hermione's gift?" She asked bluntly, getting straight to the point.
"W-what?" Stammered Lavender.
"I know what you're doing." Said Pavarti. Lavender dropped the gift back in its original place and covered it back up with the duvet guiltily.
"If you want to know what it says just wait until Hermione has opened it. I don't think she would be to happy with you if she found out about you looking through her things."
---
Ron was walking through the castle, too deep in his own thoughts to notice where he was going.
Lavender had gone off, Pavarti had gone back to Gryffindor tower and Harry, Ginny and Hermione had disappeared somewhere. This gave him time alone to think.
What was he going to say to Hermione? And how was he supposed to explain to Lavender that he wanted to break up with her?
As he neared a secret passageway on the sixth floor, he started to hear voices. The voices were coming from being a tapestry and Ron crept forward, trying to make as less noise as possible.
"So what are we going to do?"
Ron recognised that the voice belonged to Lee. Fred and George must be with him.
"There's not a lot we can do." Said Fred.
"Hermione will kill us if she suspects us." Said George.
Ron listened in harder at the mention of Hermione's name. The voices were slighting muffled due to the tapestry separating them.
There was silence for a while and Ron crept closer still, not wanting to miss anything.
"She clearly loves him and he's too stupid to see it!" Burst out Fred. Ron jumped back in shock.
Hermione loves someone.
A cold feeling crept through him.
Someone that isn't me. That's why she has been avoiding me.
