"How nice of you to join us," McGonagall said sternly. Well, aren't we just great prefects so far?
"Sorry professor, we were catching up. There were certain events over the summer..." Granger said, trailing off nervously.
"Dumbledore had informed me... how are you, Miss Riddle?" she asked, softening her tone a bit.
"I'm fine," I nodded, and McGonagall looked at me for a moment before turning to Draco. Seems like even the professors noticed the change in my appearance. I'm not that different, am I?
"Mr. Malfoy, you were with her all summer, were you not? You should not have been late," she scolded and Draco sighed.
"Actually, professor, Leah was grounded only a day after I got to finally be with her. I haven't seen her for two months," he said and McGonagall's eyebrows shot up into her hairline.
"Hm, well, no matter, you were still in this same house," she said stiffly.
"Well, I was confined to my room for those two months. I couldn't get any mail in or out and I couldn't leave for anything at all. The only person I saw, if you could call it that, was my house elf who brought me food," I explained.
"How'd you go to the bathroom?" snickered Weasley, and I glared at him.
"I have a bathroom connected to my room, you idiot," I rolled my eyes and he just shook his head and got his laughter under control.
"Oh, really Ronald," Granger said exasperatedly.
I looked around the compartment to see the other prefects. For Ravenclaw they were Anthony Goldstein and Padma Patil. Hufflepuff's prefects were Ernie Macmillan and Hannah Abbott; they were talking quietly and glancing at me occasionally.
"Now, as you all know it is now your duty to act as role models for the younger students. I do not wish to single out any of you, but Miss Riddle, please don't cause as much trouble," McGonagall said pleadingly.
"I feel like every Slytherin should be like me," I shrugged and she sighed.
"Professor, why was she picked as a prefect?" asked Hannah Abbott distastefully.
"I could say the same about a girl who has absolutely no purpose in this life," I said coolly and she shrunk in her seat.
"Oh, touched a nerve," I smirked and she dropped her gaze to the floor without a word.
"Behave yourselves at once. Now, Miss Riddle was chosen because as it is, the students already do look up to her, and respect her. She will be able to control them without a problem," she said and I smirked.
"Precisely," I smiled and McGonagall then frowned at me.
"Where is your badge?" she asked and I sighed.
"I wasn't allowed any mail, no one gave it to me," I said.
"Be sure to have them send it to you," she said firmly and I nodded.
"I will, professor," I said.
"Very well, now I wish for you to all take shifts patrolling the corridors until we reach Hogwarts, and then once school begins you are to patrol the halls until midnight every night. Slytherin's patrol the dungeons and first floor, Hufflepuff's the second and third, Ravenclaw's the fourth and fifth, and Gryffindor's the sixth and Seventh. Anyone can check the Astronomy tower at any time," she explained and I sat down next to Draco, Granger and Weasley doing the same.
