Karoline sighed, resting back against the back seat as she packed up her car. Dean and Alayna had filled everyone in on the big plan Pestilence had and what exactly 'it's too late' meant. the Swine Flu vaccine was filled with the Croatoan virus. It was an efficient way to wipe out the planet. And honestly, she wasn't as shocked as she should've been that, that was their big end game plan.
"What's your problem?" Her Dad's voice fluttered over to her and she peeked out of her open car door to see Castiel leaning up against the truck they were going to take out to stop the virus and Tom wheeling up to the Angel
Castiel glanced over at the older Van Allen blankly, "This is what they mean by "the 11th hour," right?"
"Pretty much."
"Well, it's the 11th hour, and I am useless. All I have is this," he waved the shotgun for emphasis and Karoline bit her lip resisting the urge to giggle at the child-like pout on his lips. "What am I even supposed to do with it?"
"Point it and shoot."
"What I used to be-"
"Are you really gonna bitch to me?" Tom cut him off and Castiel sighed in exasperation, glancing down at the hunter stuck in a wheel chair. "Quit pining for the varsity years... And load the damn truck." He tossed the bag to the Angel who struggled to catch it.
Karoline watched silently, hidden behind the door of her car a few yards away, as Castiel turned and loaded the bag up into the truck. She was about to get up and go over to him, console him better than her Dad had, but stopped when he spoke up.
"Hey, Cas," Tom cleared his throat and the Angel looked over at him curiously. "I need you to promise me something."
"Okay..." he trailed off, obviously confused on where the Hunter was going with this.
Tom looked around like he was trying to make sure no one else was listening or watching and Karoline ducked back into her car - glad it was dark out, she wasn't sure she'd be able to hide from him so easily if it wasn't.
"Look, the deal I made with Crowley - it wasn't a temporary one." Karoline's hand flew up to cover her mouth to stifle any noise that threatened to come out. "And when I'm gone, Karoline is going to need you."
"Tom-"
"Just listen," Tom cut him off and Castiel sealed his lips, his eyes darting between the older hunters dark brown ones. "She puts on a good front, but it's all bullshit. She needs someone to be there for her when things get tough and let's be honest, these days I don't trust Sam or Dean to do that for her anymore." He wasn't blind and no matter how hard they all tried to sweep it under the rug, he saw what was going on between Alayna and Dean. His eyes turned serious then, "So, I need you to promise you'll watch out for her."
Castiel gave a curt nod, "always."
Karoline sunk down into the seat, her back up against the back of the front seats, her eyes wide with shock and a hand covering her mouth. What did he mean 'when he's gone', how much longer did he have, exactly.
"Alright!" A loud clap caught her attention and she perked back up to see Dean coming over to her Dad and Castiel, Sam and Alayna following. She cleared her throat, putting on a brave face as she climbed out of the car to join the others. "Good luck stopping the whole zombie apocalypse." He told the three of them.
Alayna was going with Sam and Cas to stop the Croatoan virus while she went with Dean to go get Death's ring.
Sam gave a tight nod, "yeah. Good luck killing Death."
"Yeah."
Sam looked over at Alayna, clearing his throat before glancing back over at his brother and Karoline. "Remember when we used to just... hunt Wendigos? How simple things were?
